Ok that was dumb but I do have some questions for you! I have a clam coming tomorrow, first for the "new" tank and it got me thinking about how many are actually currently keeping a clam.

1. Do you keep a clam?

2. What type of clam is it?

3. How long have you had it?

4. Where do you have it placed in your tank?

Share a photo of your clam for extra class credit!

I don't keep them anymore, though I did for many years. Never had much long term success with the maxima (in the above picture) but was able to grow gigas, squamosa and deresa to more than a foot. All three of those species can be placed on the sand at the bottom of the tank. IME, in addition to light, they need some nutrients to thrive. They won't do well with pickers - angels killed my most recent 14" squamy. Maxima and crocea need to be placed higher in the tank due to their light requirements. A healthy clam should show a white new growth line on the top edge of the shell. If it doesn't - not good.

I picked up my deresa clam in July at my local Petco.

Measured at 5”

It resides on the sand bed receiving 120-130 par

It has measurable shell growth of 1/2” since July.

Not too familiar with upkeep on them and would hate to put it in the tank and it die. I know they need a lot of light and with a deep tank that would worry me that it wouldnt be getting enough.

Lets see. I have had crocea (two-blue and gold). One was full grown when I got it and I had it 9+ years. Great animal. My gold only lasted a couple years. Pretty sure I had a rogue fish. Now I have kept Maximas (babies never more than a year or so (talking under 2"). Always goes sideways when I am on vacation. Derasa, I have kept three. One was huge (had 4+ years) and died when it injured itself closing. Ripped it foot and opening. Very sad. One due to a snail that ate it and one to just too young and too much movement (had about a year). Squamosa I had for only a bit over a year. Went from 3" to 12". However, that same said snail that got the derasa got the squammy. I figured it out too late. It was a huge red foot conch.

EDIT:
I currently have a maxima that I have had going on 3 years. It is about 5" and got it at 4". Waiting for my tank to get out of fallow time and will add another squamosa definitely.

I had a clam, wife loved it and asked if I could buy it at a frag swap. I was definitely interested and had done some research so I was cool buying one. Sadly wasn't able to identify the pyramid snails it was infested with until it was looking pretty sad. Then trying to get it into a QT tank and get it treated it was handled a little too roughly because I am a putz and I lost it. That was over a year ago and I really want to get another. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Probably going to next spring if I see a nice one at the frag swap again, got a melanurus now that will take care of the pyramid snails, plus I'll be more observant as well.

Down to 2 clams at the moment. Had 14 at my peak. The current guys are a 12” Squamosa that I have had since December of 2009 and a derasa that is about 14” that I bought in September of 2011. Both have live on the sand bed and survived cold water in 2 long distance moves as well as a severe pyramidellid snail invasion. The photos aren’t current but these boys are substantially bigger now.

Yep. This is why my clam is down in my 40g lps system currently and not in the main tank. I had lots of clam eaters. Now, I should be able to get one for the main system. However, my current clam is so happy, I will not move it. Wish I had a picture of it. Gorgeous blue maxima.

I’ve had my squamosa since April and it’s been doing great. It’s was on the sand and getting 200 par and now it’s on a bare bottom getting 360 par. Since I added it my nitrates have reduced and alk had to be increased, so definitely monitor your alk for swings.

I know two things about clams:
* Lots of light, I mean LOTS
* You gotta test for Mag and keep mag above 1400-1500 by dosing

....actually a third thing
* if you have a CBB you're new clam will be dinner in about 2 days

I’ve never heard of them eating a clam?
