Ya they’re pretty common clam nippers

Well dang! I’m going to have to watch it and see what happens! Good thing I have a gray tank just in case!

Yes, I have a Maxima. It is about 4 months in tank. It is about 3.5 inches. It is placed near the bottom of the tank in a moderately high flow area cradled on a rock.

Ok that was dumb but I do have some questions for you! I have a clam coming tomorrow, first for the "new" tank and it got me thinking about how many are actually currently keeping a clam.

1. Do you keep a clam?

2. What type of clam is it?

3. How long have you had it?

4. Where do you have it placed in your tank?

Share a photo of your clam for extra class credit!

I have three clams, all are maxima clams approx 2.5-3 inches, i have had it in my tank for about two months, I have them on the sand bed with a nice piece of rock under them buried in the sand. PAR at the sand bed is approx 80-100 using Radion G4. They have been wide open and happy from day one. I will be gradually increasing the light in the tank for my SPS which will give them some additional PAR but they were happy as themselves at 90 PAR. I feed Reef chili and Reef Roids mixture EOD.

Keep a close eye on your CA and Alk the first few days they really do pull a lot of ALK and CA.

In addition one of my clams I did not clean off well and my nassarius literally swarmed it. I put that clam in the fuge and went to work came home and then scrubbed the shell clean. When I put him back he was fine. The snails did not touch the other two so I believed there was something dead or dying on the shell of the one they attacked.

1. Do you keep a clam?
I had a clam.

2. What type of clam is it?
Fish poo. It didn't make it.

3. How long have you had it?
It lasted around a month.

4. Where do you have it placed in your tank?
This was the problem. I put it in a high light, lower flow area. My Hippo Tang kept moving it. I built a little shelter to keep it safe while it attached, which it did. The Hippo Tang didn't care and moved it anyway. He dropped it into a dark cave in my rocks where I couldn't get to it.
The end.

I have a clam but totally by accident. My recently purchased Zoa happened to grow over some sort of clam. Kinda cool though

As much as I would love to try one, I just no longer have the room for one. Potentially when I finally make my upgrade to my 75. But that's a ways down the road :)

While we currently don't have a tank at this moment, we've kept a few clams over the years. Kept maximas, crocea, derasa and squamosa (my favorite) longest kept clam was over 7+years, a squamosa bought at 3" and grew to 12". Depending on species they were kept all over the tank from rockwork to the bottom on the glass. Here's some pics of a few of the many :D

Currently I have 2. One's a dark blue crocea, about 5". Has always done great at about 8" below the water line under a Radeon for 3 years. It has a big, flowery mantle that seems hyper extended at times and always has good, bright white new growth. Its attached to a rock in a crevice that shelters it. I had another crocea a few years before that on a rock that was fairly flat but an urchin developed a taste for its byssal threads? I know, weird but twice it uprooted the clam and it died. I should have got rid of the urchin the second I saw it harassing the clam.

I've had 2 maximas in the last 2 years. One was real small and didnt make it but a few weeks. The other that I currently have doesnt seem too happy and doesnt extend its mantle all the way. I stuck it down in the sand a few days ago. Hopefully it does better.
