I'd really like to start a dedicated frag tank. It would let me keep the clutter out of my displays and allow for proper quarantine. I hate depending on frag racks on the glass. They are hard to clean around and make it harder to accommodate different coral needs. Also, a real frag tank would let me keep the kind of pest hunter that doesn't always work well in a community tank, like a six line. Most frags go into my 10g nano because it's easier to keep a close eye on them and intervene if something is off, but it gets crowded quickly. I hate throwing coral out; I want to keep every piece that gets trimmed or broken. I need more space!

Wow! You all have some beautiful frag tanks!

I keep my frags and the extra pieces I pull from our 120 gallon display tank, in a 3 tank frag setup I've named "the rack and rubble frag system" Totally separate from the main tank, it is 3 tanks plumbed together, all sharing a central sump. It works great, since I keep some LPS, leathers, shrooms and a bunch of SPS. The central higher flow cube, houses most of the sps on egg crate, the 15 gallon low flow rubble tank holds a bunch of shrooms and leathers and the medium flow lowboy gets mainly LPS.

The video does a more thorough job at describing the setup and some recent updates.

Started my frag tank in late 2021. Got a smokin deal on a Lowboy 50 gallon. I didn’t really want to be crawling under the tank to maintain. So I built an aio system. Sacrificed about 5” x 24” of real estate to keep all of the maintenance up top. I don’t regret that move one bit.

I’m personally not a big frag plug fan. For display, I get it. But they’re a bit of a hassle when bringing one home to mount. I personally like rock mounted frags. A natural look, easy to glue in to rock work etc.

Here we are 8 months later and everything’s doing nicely.

I recently purchased a PNW custom micro reef ready tank that holds about 1 quart of water although it was a bit expensive I thought of it as a novelty. I was thinking recently about what I could do with the frags on my substrate so I think I will add water from my main system during a water change and an old frag that I had purchased that did not survive and has been in the back of the system for a while let it cycle for a while and then add some small pieces of montipora and echinopra as an experiment not to worried if it fails. By the way I have healthy montipora and echinopora and I plan on adding a few small pieces that live on the substrate that I knocked off the mother colonies during maintenance.

If it’s only one or two frags, I’ll just put them on a rock or in the sandbed. If it’s a bunch, then I’ll bring out the Frag rack. And in some cases, such as a massive amount of frags or a possible infection on the new frag, I’ll put them into a separate tank.

I’ve been slowing building my frag tank over 2 years and it’s been wet for about 2 months now. I still need to get more equipment but I’m happy with how things are turning out. I will be adding an ato and most likely a dosing pump in the near future as well as new led lights for under the tank. The current ones fell after a week and I have not had a chance to fix them as you can see in the photo haha

This was my first tank I took slow to put together which made it much more rewarding. It still has a long way to go to get it where I want it.

I have a tank for growing out and qting corals that is separate from my main system. However, I ran out of room, so a few frags are in my sump now. :)

Glenner'sreef - I love the idea of sacrificing some room for AIO in a Lowboy. Thinking of making one like that myself. Happy Reefing : )

That looks awesome! I wanted the space of a Sump for all my bio media. I wanted nothing in the Low Boy but coral frags, and the entire sump is dedicated to filtration and media. But that AIO looks awesome,n
