What part of Idaho? I'm up North in CDA. How much would I use in a 75 gallon daily? I normally get reef nutrition and that little bottle lasts awhile.

Hey @Jeeperz I see you’re in Couer d’Alene, ID. I’m in Libby, MT about 215 miles from you. Are you a member of the SPCDA reef club? I paid dues but have never attended a meeting.

I am a member but don't go to meetings. I only joined to try to sell my tanks with no luck. Would love to live outside Libby, beautiful up there but just like here it's unaffordable. Pm if you want to keep thread clean

Hello! I'm in Eagle - just outside of Boise.

It is pretty difficult to overdose live phyto. In short, almost any amount added on a consistent basis will be beneficial. The organisms that consume it will grow and multiply to a point of equilibrium. This will be very beneficial to the system. The phyto feeds some organisms (including some corals) directly, and other organisms and corals consume the increased pods, offspring, and microorganisms that multiply because of the increased phytoplankton available. The phyto also consumes nutrients until it is consumed itself.

Having said that, I usually recommend starting to dose at 3ml/10gallons of system volume per day. So, for your system, about 25ml/day would be a good place to start. This will actually give you more phyto cells than most other brands because I grow and ship the phyto at much denser levels than most growers. As you observe, you can increase this amount by several times if you want (my smallest system is a 40 breeder with 20 sump, and I dose 150ml/day). Or, a smaller amount would be okay too.

I will take a 16 ounce bottle to start. Then may get on a subscription or bigger bottle depending on how much I use and how long it lasts before it crashes in the fridge. I stopped buying algae barn because it lasts like a week after I get it before it crashes. Reef nutrition lasts months somehow

Great! I'll send you a PM.

Fresh live phyto will keep for quite a while in the fridge. It is best to give it a gentle shake once a day and open the bottle to let some fresh air in. For the first month, there really isn’t any noticeable change. During the second month, the motile cells become less active, but there is still a fair amount of activity. By the end of the third month, there isn’t really any activity, but the cells are still intact. If a new culture is started with the three-month old sample, it will grow and some of the cells will be motile. So, using the phyto within a month would be ideal, within two months is fine, and even three months is probably okay.

I tried for awhile to do my own phyto with some success and more failure, I was trying to culture pods, also with little success. Just became too much maintenance on top of the tanks and work. So I support others that can manage it

I can appreciate that. It actually took me many months/couple of years to refine my techniques. And, I am still learning. Every now and then, I see someone who claims to easily culture phyto with little effort, and I don't understand how they do it. I also wonder if they are actually culturing what they think they are culturing sometimes...
