We left the sleeping baby sea lion and his mother behind and started making our way back to the inflatables. It was still early morning on 21st May 2019 at Espinosa on Fernandina Island Galapagos and these are the parting pictures from this particular beautiful island

We were just getting ready to start our journey North to Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island around 10am 21st May 2019. Remember the fisherman ?

Its a long journey North around Isabela, especially if your in a small boat, so to save fuel and get there quicker, the local fisherman hitch a ride!

We continued on our journey North to Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island Galapagos and encountered Frigate Birds on the journey which basically flew with us for most of the way.

On the way we crossed the equator and had a few drinks as we went over........

After a few hours we arrived at Punta Vicente Roca, Isabela Island Galapagos. It was early afternoon on 21st May 2019

These are some views as we approached and it was absolutely beautiful. The sea was such an incredible colour, like a green.

We dropped anchor and were sat around for a few minutes before going snorkelling from the inflatables at Punta Vicente Roca.

I was in my usual position on the back of the boat enjoying the view, when I spotted something ‘in the water’

I prefer to be the Apex predator, when at all possible, so kindly declined the offer to go snorkelling! Lol

We woke on the morning of 22nd May 2019 at Santiago Island at Puerto Egas Galapagos

At 0500 we boarded the inflatables and headed for the beach for a ‘wet’ landing.

A bit of background on this place, Santiago actually consists of two coalesced volcanoes: a typical shield volcano on the northwest end and a low, linear fissure volcano on the southeast end. Life is abundant near the shore. Lava lizards are common on many parts of Santiago, as well as the other islands. Marine iguanas and lots of sally light-foot crabs are around, along with Galápagos penguin, blue-footed *******, and the lava heron.

Vegetation in the interior of the island had been decimated by feral goats, estimated to number as many as 50,000 or more. Goats have inhabited Santiago since at least 1813 when Caption Porter of the USS Essex allowed four of them to escape. The resulting loss of food sources threatens not only the native vegetation but the native animals such as the giant tortoise and land iguana as well.

In 2001 they started goat eradication, and by 2005 the last feral goat was removed from Santiago Island and they used Judas Goats as well

As goats are social animals, sterilised Judas goats, fitted with radio collars and then released into the population, would seek out the remaining feral goats, allowing them to be located through radio telemetry and then eliminated.

The feral goats are just more evidence of how fragile a healthy and balanced ecosystem truely is.

It’s extremely fragile and they are very cautious to keep out potential problem animals and plants, which could devastate the environment as can be seen with the goats.

When you leave Ecuador you go through a special scanner with the luggage looking for any type of seeds (and animals I guess) and also when you land at Galapagos

Fiddler crabs right? They leave piles of mud balls everywhere at low tide and then retreat I believe. The time lapses are impressive when you see how much sand they can go thru in 1 tide cycle.
