That is a huge caldera.... ;Wideyed;Wideyed
It has the largest caldera in the Galapagos with a 14km ridge within it and dimensions of 7.2 x 9.3km so yes it’s very big. It’s also the shallowest of the Isabela volcanoes at 100m deep.

It was also quiet hot. I’m wasn’t actually sure if the heat from the rock I was sat on, which was burning my backside, was from the hot sun overhead, or being on an active volcano! Lol

So we returned from the journey to the top of the Sierra Negra volcano still on 17th May 2019 and Isabela Island and it was time for a little relaxation in my favourite place.

I reminded myself why I don’t wish to partake in snorkelling, and we would see their much bigger cousins later....

There was also a shoal of 40-50 puffer fish swimming alongside the boat along with a sea lion.

The following pictures cannot express the beauty of this place, it was simply stunning. I took about 50 pictures so these are just a few trying to show the view I had for those few special hours.....

What a great trip Shaun, such a special place. Will you share your favorite place in the Galapagos and a pic?

When I look back at those pictures above, that was certainly very special, I took many pictures because, well, I just needed capture every moment of it.

I’ll give it some thought certainly.

But there is much to come on the adventure such as ...

What a great adventure, Shaun.
It was indeed Jan, I still cant believe we did it, and there is much more to come. We are still within the first 2 days in Galapagos.

As the evening of the 17th May 2019 drew closer, I was sat at the back of the boat enjoying the sunset.

The pictures and my words cannot explain the atmosphere here, it was absolutely magical

I was watching the sun go down when a group of 6 pelicans flew past the boat. The Pelican picture isn’t up to normal standards because I was so shocked to see them, I had to quickly crab the camera with a burst of shots!

Enjoy......

And then these guys flew past..... I was completely speechless.....

And then the sky started to burn, like fire... sunset at Isabela Island Galapagos..

Beautiful.
The south has the best sunsets

It was just breathtaking, I just kept taking pictures to try and capture every moment

Very cool Shaun ! !

I tell you what, when those pelicans flew past we were like wow. We spotted them in the distance thinking what are they. They were flying in perfect formation in a line, and it was a rush to turn the camera on.

LOL!

If you get chance, just go. The marine life is simply amazing under water (so I’m told as I stayed on the rescue boat! Lol)

Some of the pictures I’ll show you of playful sea lions, penguins, it’s simply wonderful and that’s why I can’t really tell anyone what the highlights were, there were just to many.

And I sit here at home in my chair and think, wow, did I really do that......

One day I will. [emoji41]

At 0530 on 18th May 2019 we departed the boat for the small island of Punta Moreno which is located on the north coast of Isabela Island between the volcano Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcano

The terrain was quiet hard to walk on in certain areas and consist of lava flows, but then you will come across a small oasis of a lagoon dotted around

The viscosity of the lava must have been mind blowing to watch. Thick honey, much like Hawaiin flows. Black sand beaches. Something mysterious and beautiful about them.

Thanks so much for sharing again ;)

We continued to walk around Punta Moreno and its volcanic terrain, and then came across a lagoon with flamingos......

And trying to get a picture of 2 flamingos with both their heads out of the water is a nightmare! Lol

They do it alternately, I guess for protection and to keep an eye out for potential harm

Still on the day of 18th May 2019 and on Punta Moreno, we continued the journey over the volcanic rocks and back to were the boats would pick us up.

A pelican flew past at very close range, I managed to get a burst of pictures, not the best but you get the idea.

When we left the island the water was only a few feet deep and littered with rocks, so we went backwards so the crew could see what to avoid
