Tank is going through some serious ugly phases. I mean, eww. Embrassed to post picks. I am 1 day into a 3 day lights out schedule. Hopefully that takes care of some of the nasties. All parameters are right in line. Most corals looking good. And Dave is still loving life.

Don’t be embarrassed. We have all been there! Glad Dave is loving life, did you decide on a friend or mate for him yet?

Not yet. I am probably going to but i want to get the uglies under control first. Then it’ll probably come down to what i find locally first.

I did decide to try something stupid tho. I found an awesome rock nem at my new LFS for $30. They also had this really unique nem shrimp. I figured if he lives in the nem he maybe okay with Dave. Fingers crossed. (I know it’s insane).

Nah he’ll be ok with Dave, it’s Dave who won’t be ok with him! Lol. My moneys on Dave. But I’m rooting for the shrimp. Anemone shrimp are super cool shrimps, pretty too.

Just tested the water:

pH: 8.23
Salt: 1.025
Nitrate: 0
Phosphate: 0
Cal: 400
Alk: 9

Finally got to where I can see a change in Alk and calcium and will have to start doing small dosing. I don’t think I’ll be adding any Alk as I’d like that to get to 8, but I’ll be adding some calcium.

Uglies are starting to go away, rocks are clearing up and looking good. Need to scrape some glass later this week.

The rock anenome I got i think is a goner. I believe it had an injured foot as it would open up with my lights but won’t ever attach. It tries to and just ends up fluttering all over the place.

I also discovered that some food for Dave is living in the heater section. in a last minute pinch a month ago I bought him a peppermint shrimp to eat. I thought he ate it but it turns out the shrimp got through the filter and into the back chamber. He is just chilling back there.

Got 3/4 of the way through the top this evening.

wood is too thick for my jig saw. Really hard to cut straight with a sawsall. They are behind the tank though, never to be seen, so not too worried.

I forgot that it actually gets cold where I live now as opposed to Florida. Got way too cold last night and stain didn’t set well. Fortunately it’s only on the bottom that will never be seen. I sanded it down a little and it gave it a cool antique look. I don’t like how blue weathered gray is so I am changing it up for the top. Plan is to take classic gray and white. Mix it 50/50 and get more of a white component. Supposed to be 70 tomorrow so we’ll see how it works out.

Also realized that when using a two in one stain that you don’t wipe, it completely covers the grains and lines of butcher block. Will not be using that on the top side.

Got the top side stained, now just have to let it sit and seal it. Doesn’t show the butcher’s block as much as I would have liked but I think it looks pretty cool. Did 50/50 white gray mix then two coats of pure white. If I were to do it again, I’d do 3 parts white 1 part gray, 1 coat and call it a day.

Dave got a friend a week ago:

his/her name is Toast. Enjoys small to medium ghost shrimp, slow swims in the afternoon, and perching on brightly colored sticks.

Should I be concerned about how green my rocks are? It’s not slimy or anything. They basically did this instead of turning purple with coraline.
