Hi guys
So I got the hanna checker for nitrate.
How do you like it?
I tested my reefer 350, and I got 5.00
Replaced 10 gallon of water. Still 5.00. ?

Second question, should I dose no3:po4-x ? Some people says it isn't safe

Thank u

I just tried the Hanna no3 tester for the first time since I bought it. I’m not a huge fan but I will keep trying it. But anyways have you tried the dilution method?

If you test your nitrate and it flashes 5.00 it is an indication you are out range and require the dilution method. Then you get a range above 5ppm.

Sucks because if you are above 5ppm bit think you are just below you burn time having to retest. That I don't like but deal with ot because I like digital numbers over a color chart.

Did you ever do the dilution test on the Hanna nitrate tester?

You have to put 1ml of tank water, 9ml of fresh salt water, mix them, and then use 7ml of the mixture to run the test as usual. Then whatever value the checker gives you, multiply by ten. So if it says 2.34, your nitrates are 23.4.

I hate the Hanna nitrate tester. Just can’t do it anymore. Got good readings once or twice. Not worth the trouble IMO.
It’s definitely a little more involved than other tests, but personally I cannot stand, I absolutely loathe color match tests, so for me it’s worth the extra effort. To get a clear reading you have make sure the cuvette is completely clean, for a while I was wiping it off with a paper towel but it wasn’t getting it completely clean so I switch to a microfiber cloth, and since then I haven’t had any false readings. Also, and I don’t know if there’s any truth to this, but BRS said to do it, supposedly when you put the cuvette in the checker you’re supposed to make sure the little ‘10 mil’ thing is facing forward (or towards you if you’re looking at the front of the checker).

I also do have trouble matching colors. But to me having an idea of my nitrates is good enough. I can tell if they’re too high or low without being exact. I use Hanna for things I dose for since I’d rather have exact for them. Maybe I just needed more practice with the Hanna. But so may troubles I had early on just soured me too much on the experience. Wish we could have made it works
