Are you serious??? They couldn’t just switch the design of their packaging instead? I obsessively worry about every grain of reagent to go inside the vial. I honestly think I’m trying wayyyyyy too hard for this hobby. I keep thinking I’m in a science lab and everything must be precise and perfect by the gram…not even the manufacturers are being precise.

LOL. People love to complicate it. K.I.S.S. it.

After a few years in the hobby you will realize that keeping a reef tank really isn’t that hard and all this stuff about having to be precise and accurate, etc is nothing but smoke n mirrors from the vendors to keep you buying stuff! Obviously you should be somewhat accurate but precision accuracy is not needed.

I filled this 10ml syringe that I got from my Red Sea test kit up to the 1st black line to the 10ml mark. The 1st picture shows the line which I perfectly matched to the 10ml mark with tank water. I filled it all to the Hannah vial and It overfilled the 10ml mark on the Hannah vial.

what gives?

Keep It Simple Stup...
And if you really want to ensure you have the right volume, you can always buy a pipette:

This one works great.

I prefer “keep it simple, silly” as i would never call a fellow reefer “stupid”….masochists yes, stupid no.
I don’t think that term is calling anyone stupid. I think it means Stupid-Simple…which basically means it’s so simple it’s almost stupid.

Have you ever read Paul Bs book? Avant- garde marine aquarist? There’s some fun stuff in there showing how we are over complicating stuff. He does like driveway cleaner and something else random (the chemical solutions themselves are not random).

Like some people mentioned at the beginning of the thread what you want is consistency so just make sure you always fill your Curvette with the same amount of water. Our hobby grade test kits are not the most accurate by far, but what you’re looking for is a trend and by following the same procedure every time you will be able to determine whether your levels are raising or dropping even though they aren’t exactly the most accurate.

That exact syringe is the middle line to measure 10ml
Others only have 1 line , some like the posted picture with multiple lines

always double check before using them .
their intended use is not meant to be accurate

I've never heard of measuring using the middle line of the plunger.

Just reviving, as I got a pipette as a gift.
10ml measured in left vial. Water transferred from left to right vial:

They are definitely not accurate, so better pick one thing to go by and stick with that.

My pipette sometimes is off as well for no reason and its the 4 Es brand so I just use a small jewlers scale usually and just use grams.

This is not a titration test. It does not matter as long as you are reasonably close, just try to be consistent and you are good.

I was always told to go by Hanna line not actual 10 ml. Looks like real 10 ml is better choice?

I've always had issues with testing kits like this... even different syringes of 2, 5, and 10 ml are different from each other... and none of them equal the lines on the vials from hanna or ATI or anyone else...
Also different amounts of air show up in the 1ml syringes depending how fast you draw reagents which equates to different amount of liquid being added. also the powders of po4 reagents aren't always easy to get all in the vial and it says try to get most in... how much less then all would change the accuracy?

I would think that these "scientific instruments" would have a much lower tolerance of error then I see in the test kits and syringes... especially when they're being designed to measure a 100th of a part per million... I would think that too much or too little water and/or reagent would greatly alter the readings.
I'm not a scientist so maybe these things self correct somehow by not being entirely accurate but if they do, I'd love to see it explained.
