Good morning and Happy Sunday everybody!
Back when I had a reef, Sunday was reef day. It was my day for water change, skimmer cleanout, and deep cleaning pumps and sump and pruning chaeto and testing parameters. I'd dedicate all of Sunday morning to the reef.
During the week i'd do minor maintenance like scrubbing the glass of algae ect.. but Sunday was my major day. Do you have a specific day that you dedicate to water changes and deep cleaning?

I do water changes every "whenever I can squeeze it into my busy schedule". This is meant to be weekly and typically on Sundays, but lately it has been every other week at random times.

BTW, how often does one change the leaf litter on one's lizard cage?

What kind of system are running for the lizard, bioactive or not?
For a bioactive terrarium I'd change it once a year
For a sterile tank I do it every month, or before that if it gets too dirty

I voted other. When I worked it was Sunday and I did it regularly. Now that I'm retired I do it when I feel like it. I had a much better maintenance schedule when I worked. I've gotten quite lazy lately. I've even been putting off cleaning glass but dang does the tank look awesome when I do clean it lol

Usually Sunday, but some times I procrastinate and do it Monday. But because I have tomorrow off, I just said "I'll do it tomorrow"

I live in Florida and there are enough lizards outside (native and otherwise) that I don't currently feel the need to keep any myself. Albeit breeding finches is on my bucket list. My question was directed toward the OP, a self-identified former reef keeper, who has also been known to keep lizards.

Just did one....been meaning to do one the last week or so. My book says it's been a month.

I had a pretty long patch of GHA for the past few weeks. I added a bunch of snails, mostly astreas, 20 days ago, the patch was mostly gone today.

I work every third weekend now and have been exhausted during the week. I want to get a couple more in to tidy the tank before Thanksgiving.

With my lizards I would use ceramic tiles, it's easy to clean and naturally filed down their nails. With bearded dragons I wasn't a fan of loose substrate as when eating crickets they tend to accidentally eat some which can cause impaction.
With my snake I use aspen bedding. Every Sunday I check for poo and spot clean. And around every 3 months all the bedding gets replaced.

Have you tried magnolia leaves? Best substrate IMO.

It's a lot like a reef tank really. There is PLENTY of videos on how to do it, but I'll give a brief rundown.
You want biodiversity and a clean up crew just like a reef tank. Rolly pollies, springtails, earthworms, much more. A lot of these can be gathered outside! You'll want a good substrate too, Josh's frogs ABG is a great choice. You'll need a drainage layer underneath that substrate for when you water the plants, I like to use lava rocks, you have to separate the drainage layer from the substrate, I put a window screen inbetween the two it works great. Finally you need lighting t5s are really your best bet.

Got it. I can get CUC from outside with no worries? Also I have a drainage layer, and bioshot.
