Have you ever upgraded a tank just because there is one or two fish that you want?

I keep going back and forth on this! There are two fish that I would love to have again, a Heniochus Dephreutis, and a Red Sea Regal Angel. It seems really stupid to spend $4000 to get a bigger tank just to keep these fish, but I can’t seem to make a decision. Please tell me how you decided it was worth it for you.

EDIT!!! After a week of thinking about it I made the decision and purchased an Innovative Marine 170 EXT!!!

Pretty much every size upgrade I've done has been for fish. Never one specific fish but just to be able to keep larger fish in general. My last upgrade was for the fish I have been keeping for several years and I thought they looked like they needed a little more swim room.

EDIT : Was it worth it? It depends on your family and financial situation. Only excess or disposable income should be used for hobbies IMO. I have no regrets.

I started with a 29-gallon tank, then upgraded to a 55-gallon, and now a 75-gallon all because I keep liking new fish I can’t resist adding.

Retiring in one year, so we should have enough money if we die at a reasonable age! If we live longer than that it may be a problem. Cyanide can take care of that, though.

That’s the funny thing. I don’t really need any space for more corals, and don’t really want to spend money on them, but I do want the fish.
Is your yellow tang fairly recent? Tank bred?

Good for you. I retired debt free 2 years ago. We live a modest life style and are able to live off of my SS alone (I'm not relying on that tho) My retirement savings fund the hobby. My grandfather had a saying. You can't eat or drink money so you burn it, use it as TP or spend it.

what's not to love! The blonde Naso is about 13 inches with streamers, those are 4 inch stand pipe overflows for size reference

Beautiful tank. It’s nice seeing a Naso in the appropriate size tank.

I like this retirement planning method! Tank upgrades seem inevitable, from 2009-2015 ish believe we went 54g corner -> 155g bowfront -> 240g long (8'x2'x2') all for the fish, those tangs! Then we moved, got rid of it all, small cube for a couple years, moved again, back into it now with a 90g. Would just upgrade to the biggest size your space and budget will allow just don't lower your cyanide age doing it, ;)

Exactly! We also live pretty modestly…except for the reef tank. :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
