Welcome to R2R. Love the idea of toddler tanks/jars. Great to get them interested. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed.
I’m leaning towards setting that one up with a mushroom or something to start.
I’m thinking supervised feedings of pellets would make for a fun and manageable interaction for a toddler. Just have to make sure I find a mushroom with good feeding response.
I welcome other ideas for tank inhabitants. Runner up is currently a rock flower anemone.

I’ve been delaying this for far too long...

Hello and thanks for all the help so far. Not sure what I would have done without all the information you guys have managed to gather here.

I was introduced to reefing a few years ago when my employer added a Red Sea Reefer 625 to our lunch room. Before that I hadn’t really thought about being able to keep coral in a home aquarium. From their I got sucked into some of the daily maintenance (I was the only one that was brave enough to clean the skimmer cup) and was fascinated by everything that went on with the tank.
Fast forward to December 2019 and I had discovered pico reefs and wanted a tank of my own. So I grabbed a jar, bubbler, heater, grow light from Home Depot, and setup in my furnace room (a safe spot for making messes and controlling access for children). Back then I thought of it as a stepping stone to a larger reef (learn the basics without worrying too much about the chemistry and buying crazy pricey lights) but now I’m hooked and want a larger reef.. and more picos.

And now for the important part. Here are my tanks:
- 2 gallon pico with sump (excuse the hiding gsp, they just finished getting cleaned)
- 20 gallon long (started cycling today)
- 0.5 gallon jar (toddler stole one of my dry rock last night and declared he was making an aquarium, so with a little help he did)
