It’s already been said a couple times here, but I regret buying my 75 gallon. It was only up for 6 months and I have a new 170 gallon in the garage to replace it. If I had just purchased the 170 to begin with I wouldn’t be facing all this preparation, work and misery to switch it out.

Initally buying a second hand tank and set up - while it got me instantly into the hobby, it also came with others not so right set up - so its been a learning curve to finally transfer into something that was 100% mine.

My current tank. I thought I did enough research and I didn’t.

My lfs screwed me pretty good, sadly, saving me money where it didn’t need to be saved and costing me money where I have to replace the crap I got, which was not the point.

I wanted a 20ish gallon but decided that 40 would be less work than a smaller tank.

So I got a tank drilled, plumbed, and a sump.

Pro-Herbie quiet overflow
Con-Ball valve instead of a gate valve-saved ~$50 not worth it. I’ve had more trouble with that thing than I care to deal with.

About a month away from having it fixed. I am re-designing the plumbing for the sump so I can maximize the space.

Sump, loved it but knew nothing about it.
Return chamber is 4x4.5in and the sold me a plantation DC return pump.

I mean, if you know there are hardly any return pumps to fit on the actual return chamber-might wanna tell someone.

But their bs lead me to really think and I will have my sump set up with a sock filter, refugium, space for a protein skimmer (got it just can’t get it to make this unobtainum substance called skimmate) and my return chamber will be properly filtered and working.

Overall it’s been a blast but still ticked off. So glad they gave me shotty test results and made me think they were not very good at their job. Said I had 1.028 salinity when I had 1.025 and 1.026 on my Hanna and refractometer. Wouldn’t sell me a fish. So I went to the other lfs had them retest all my waters and got my fish I wanted.

I will say the lfs miscues did lead me to find R2R and it’s been a blast.

My regret was that I kept a no-name skimmer and lighting fixture with my purchase of a used 75g. They both sucked. Took me a few months to figure that out. Also, I regret getting a used tank. It started leaking six months in and I jad to do an emergency tank swap which took me three days. I'll NEVER buy used again.....
There's a lot of things I'll buy used but after seeing the dumb things people try to DYI on forums and Reddit and Facebook and everywhere else I think I'll pass on tanks and stands unless it's someone I know and trust

I am sorry that I got an Atlantic pistol shrimp. He was much bigger than other pistols that pair with gobies and my smaller fish but as big as a firefish began to disappear. Needless to say that Rice Krispie has been banished to the sump where he seems quite happy.

-KZ coral snow that is like 6x the cost of making your own.
-Liquid AFR which is not nearly as cost effective as mixing your powder.
-Hanna alkalinity test.
-Kessil gooseneck mount which is horrible

Two: Bringing in live rock with hydroids (better to freeze, boil, and kill the rock than have those). And attempting to use caulerpa in my refugium without proper return pump socks -- got on my rocks in 75G display and had to spend once a week pulling out a double handful just to control it. Never again.

Green disco mushrooms. There were 2 or 3 that were on some live rock I bought for my 120.
I should have removed then. It was one of the reasons I took the 120 down. They would release and kill whatever they touched.
They are just above the middle rock on the bottom. Zoom to see.

A golden coral banded shrimp. I was told that he "might" eat some of my hydroids... He doesn't, and I never see him. He hides 24/7. Every once in a while I will see him out swimming around in the middle of the night if I check with a flashlight. No joy at all with him. In fact, I haven't seen him in a couple weeks, not even sure if he's still alive???
He will eat all the bristle worms. As they get bigger it will be out more
