Decided after many years to finally setup my first saltwater tank. Bought a 75 gal tank for $60 dollars. Came with a brand new canister filter and stand. The stand was garbage so I built my own. My plan is for this to be a fish only tank for now. Maybe down the line I'll get into Coral. Just finished mixing water and filling the tank today. Salinity is at 1.025. Tomorrow I will start logging parameters.

Looks great! Sumps are usually preferred over canister filters in the marine hobby as they have more space for refugiums, reactors, protein skimmers, etc. and are said to be more difficult to maintain (when taking them apart), but they can certainly be used with good results. Also remember that unlike in a freshwater aquarium, salinity will rise as water evaporates, necessitating manually topping off the aquarium with RO/DI water or the usage of an auto top-off (with RO/DI).

Welcome to Reef2Reef! Like @WheatToast said, sumps are great! I actually run a sump AND a canister filter but canister filters can be a nitrate factory. Running FOWLR a sump (or at a minimum a refugium) would be helpful for nutrient uptake. HOB skimmers are available as another option as well.

looks great, funny literally 30 min ago I was thinking about how I want to set up my main display and Sid to myself "it would be cool to make the cabinet and put sliding barn doors" now I see yours and im pretty sure thats the route ill go. As @WheatToast mentioned, the #1 piece of equipment id recommend that I will not set up a tank without is a good ATO system, you can go the manual route but life will be much harder..

Thanks. Eventually I plan on running a sump but since the canister came with the tank I'm gonna run it for now. Eventually I want to make a small auto top off to keep the tank topped off. I will be retiring out of the army in a few years and plan on having a more robust permanent setup.

I actually do have a refugium that I need to plumb into the system. Will set it up and run chaeto with pods in it once the cycle is complete and before I add my first pair of clowns.

Yea, will definitely be investing in a ATO at some point, probably my next purchase along with a skimmer.
