Yes I tested nitrite were a little high doing water change. Would it even be better to just move them to a different tank?

A sudden drop in health in a mature tank (assuming it was a mature tank) can happen due to several reasons. Equipment failure, something died, overdose…

check your equipments including heaters, pumps, ato..then put some prime to neutralize any ammonia and nitrite, finally lots of water change if it is water chemistry.

good luck.

Nitrate is Harmful - Nitrite of no significance unless sky high.
Its obviously a water issue. Before asking about your numbers, . . . . .
Are you using RODI water or tap water from the faucet?
What test kits are you using ?
What is tank:
Temperature
salinity
ammonia
ph
nitrate
phosphate
Alkalinity
mag
Calcium

A feather duster out of tube is generally an indicator of high stress from high nitrate , too much water flow

Targets:
Temp 77-79
ph 8.1-8.3
salinity 1.025
nitrate < .10
phos < .04
Ammonia < .03
mG 1300
Alk 8-11
CA 400-440

i had the same PROBLEM i had 3 problems, 1 my ph was very low reaching 7.1 to 7.7 didn't when higher than that, 2 my phosphate was over 0.50 and higher, 3 my nitrate was high too. My recommendation do a 25% water change every week for 4 weeks if your ph is very low dose kalkwasser and the most important feed less your fish feed more your corals.

Nitrate or nitrite?

Nitrate is much less harmful
Nitrite has no signifance - only in freshwater.
Nitrate above 20 starts to draw concern and is MORE harmful especially is po$ is also high

Anytime you have a die off or somthing like this you should immediately do a large water change with fresh saltwater as it's a cascading death effect causing a crash the duster probly dies first crapping up the water which then took a coral that relese a ton of toxic waste into the water which then bombed the other corals causing it to get worse and worse faster and faster

Large water changes and tons of carbon may save it

You have that wrong

Nitrates and nitrites are two different types of compound. Nitrates (NO3) consist of one nitrogen atom and three oxygen atoms. Nitrites (NO2) consist of one nitrogen atom and two oxygen atoms. Nitrates are relatively inert, which means they're stable and unlikely to change and cause harm

Also to low no3 can also be harmful and can and will kill coral but it'll bleach first more then likely so I stand by your tank got bombed and large water changes and lots carbon is the only thing that might save it

What should the nitrite level be in a saltwater tank?

The ideal concentration of nitrite in a reef aquarium is less than 0.2 ppm or 200 ppb. Nitrite levels above this value may weaken sensitive fish and corals
