I want to start dosing nitrate,im very unsure witch product to buy. My frag tank has a large refugium and my nitrates never get above 2. Its not terribly low but I would like to have it up a bit more. Keeping alot of mushrooms in the tank and I think they would benefit from high nitrates.

Before dosing nitrates, remove the refugium. That's what refugiums are for, to remove nitrates. Are you running chaeto?

Yea I've been trying to keep a decent population of pods, I had a ruby red dragnet and am planning on keeping pipfish. So I'm at an impasse as far as the refugium goes. Ill likely just remove the majority of the chaeto and see if I can get my nitrate up a bit.

You can buy food grade sodium nitrate online fairly cheap. A 1 lb. bag would last you a long time. I dose 5 ml a day in my ato to keep my nitrates around 5 ppm. There are calculators online for the recipe. I mix 1 gram of powder to 10 ml. of ro-di water.

I simply turn down the number of hours my refugium lights stay on. It does not affect my pod population. Recently I have even had to turn it off 2 days a week -but I don't like doing that as I like having more consistent pH in the tank.

For someone starting out, and don't feel like doing all that math.....

Just get some brightwell's neonitro. Use the directions on the bottle. Pretty simple.
