Hi. So I just finished a simple stand for some quarantine tanks. Based on initial reading it seemed like it was recommended to stay away from Treated Wood, so I did that.

Now I want to protect it and give it some color, but nothing fancy.

Further reading seems to suggest I should use Kilz Primer, but now I am learning that after applying the Kilz primer, I still have to give it another coat of some other paint which bummed me out.

Is there another way I can do this where I am just using one product?

Thanks in advanced.

There is a paint and primer in one but I don’t know if it’s durable because it’s interior paint. You might be able have the kilz tinted. I tinted my primer when I painted my kitchen/hallway/laundry because the paint was so expensive. Sherwin Williams is where I went.
for my stand, I used kilz on the inside and left it white. It did take a few coats for even coverage. I stained and sealed the outside of the stand.

I see there is a Kilz Complete Coat Paint & Primer.

I assume that is all I need?

Dam Paulie, you build things to last. Nice work. Wouldn't mind seeing a step by step one day :). Looks a step above most stands.

Did you already paint it with primer?

@Scotty Buttons No, I have done nothing yet. Would like to do one product. Paint with the primer on it. But all I keep reading seems to indicate go with Kilz primer, then paint. I would like to just find one product. It's a stand for many aquariums, so lots of wood.

Have a build thread but pm me this is op thread. Hey OP I first used white fence stain with water proofer, let dry then go over with a latex paint you would use for a bathroom that has mold n mildew compounds added(HomeDepot) after it dries lightly sand(100 grit) do another coat, let dry. Then lightly buff with 000 steal wool (also HD) wipe clean with dry Clean cloth,, when all done spray with clear coat (HD again)
Boom all done how long it takes is up to you

If you’re trying to avoid painting a color over white primer then get your kilz tinted. If you’re trying to get one coat coverage, I don’t think that’s going to happen unless you paint it on so thick it doesn’t fully dry and always remains tacky.

That's probably latex. Use the original oil based kilz to prime the wood. The oil base penetrates and seals the wood. Latex doesn't do that. It peels and what not if the surfaces are not prepped right. Let the kilz dry for a day or two. It gets harder after a few days. Sands better too. Hit the kilz with some 180-240 grit paper to knock the fuzz down. Should powder up nicely without clogging the sandpaper. Then you can coat it with latex, oil base paint, etc. I used it to do a base coat on my stand. Then I did all my puttying and fine filling on top of it because it is easier to see. Then did another coat of kilz to seal everything and did a final 320 sanding before spraying the outside of my stand with Benjamin Moore Advance waterborne-alkyd paint.

Since your trying to save time, your going to have to use a paint and primer in one to achieve that goal. If you can't find one then your going to need to do a coat of primer then a second coat of an exterior paint, ideally. And I would do 2 or 3 coats of paint personally, there are several brands of paint and primer in one. Depending on what stores you gave access to. Wal mart even..

All of these pics are just with the kilz. The last one was when I did the second coat of kilz before sanding it. I then epoxy coated the entire inside of the stand and used the chips like the garage floors. Then I clear coat epoxied the inside. This was for a 280g.

Just in case you need an idea for the inside of the stand.. this was a bit of a process though. Had to keep rotating and turning the stand on all side to shake the chips out evenly. Like 1 side per day.

Thank you all. Very useful information/advice. I will be doing both steps as needed to get it right. Prime it with kilz and then the paint.

KILZ that everybody is talking about might be good but I feel you’re just paying for a name I’m sure you can get the same exact results with something much cheaper

Kilz is 17.00 a gallon at home depot. What are you saving on? Kilz is not an expensive product. Now Behr paints from home depot are crap and cost more than kilz.
