Hey everyone.

So I'm trying to be a bit speedy about this. Top Shelf is having a Small Business sale this weekend, and one of their specials was a $100 "VIP Coral" mystery bag. I had some credit, so I went and checked it out. I ended up purchasing one of the bags, which, foolishly, I was under the impression that they only contained LPS. We open it at the counter, and lo and behold, a TSA Goliath Acro, which they valued (written on the bag) at $400. Normally this would be awesome, but my tank is definitely not equipped for Acros. It's mostly euphyllia and a couple derasa clams, with a few softies, and I'm certain I don't have the lighting, flow, or pristine params for this coral to thrive long term. No returns on the mystery bags, which I can't complain about of course, but I obviously would hate to see this beautiful piece just die in my tank, so I wanna try to sell it real quick. Unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about acros, other than that I can't support them. Any idea on how much I could ask for this? It's around an inch tall. I understand the TSA estimate is pretty overvalued, but I'm just curious on what others think. Worst case I just give it to someone, but I thought I may as well try to at least recoup my losses. Thanks!

tsa has that for $250 for a small frag
so that colony, geeezzz, woowww, worth A LOT!!! I would maybe call up tsa if u can right now and ask how much they think its worth
go to a local lfs, tell them how much u think its worth, ask if u can sell it to them for store credit or some cash :D

If you're keeping a clam alive you can keep sps.
Sps is a wide majority of coral, some r considered the easiest to keep out of all coral, and some, like tenuis, which is what the tsa glory coral is, are considered to be one of the HARDEST corals to keep in the hobby.
So it depends on what sps u r talking about
Cuz as I said earlier, clams are relatively easy, considered to be a beginner/intermediate thing to keep to many, a lot of beginners buy one and succeed, but many don’t have the same luck as sps

Looks like a common type fast growing acro to me. They aren't going to put a high end top selling acro in a grab bag.

I wouldn't pay more than $25-30 for that frag

Just keep it and see how it does. Use it as a tester acro and if it does well you can add other acros down the road that may interest you.

Derasas are relatively easy compared to other clams.

Lol yeah TSA prices are definitely something I take with a grain of salt…I called around to a few stores near me and none want the frag, so at this point I’ve got in listed on marketplace and I’ll see how it does in the meantime. I’m just not interested in potentially killing a relatively expensive coral (or any coral for that matter), my params (flow and lighting especially) just don’t seem good enough. Even for my clams, the lighting isn’t super intense, because derasa don’t NEED that compared to the rock boring ones, at least not very high PAR. But we’ll see how it goes!

You took it out the bag and put it in tank, right?
I did. Spent maybe an hour total in the bag once it left the store, but to be fair, it was already in a bag in a mystery bag bin at the store. So total time in bag? No clue. I just took those pics when I was temp acclimating

That's just my point, no one really wants it because it's not sought after nor does is have any type of history. It's just a coral that's not selling well so they put it in grab bags, ect.

Maybe ask some one locally to trade an LPS or softie for it.

Yeah, probably the only way I’ll get rid of it lol. Thank you!

Wow, that’s such a crazy find with the mystery bag! I can totally understand why you’re bummed it’s not the right fit for your tank, especially since Acros can be finicky. Those mystery bags were fun, I myself purchased quite a few and ended up getting some decent pieces (Bubbleyum tenuis, Jester Insanity torch etc), and some that were ok. That’s the gamble/fun though :).

If you're part of any local reef groups, forums, Facebook marketplace, they might be a great place to get offers too! If not, giving it to someone who can take care of it is a great option too or trade. Hope you find a good home for it!

I'm confused on this idea of keeping a clam = you can keep sps, when generally sps flow requirements are quite a bit higher than an lps tank with a clam. I'd have to turn both my icecap gyre 2k's up to almost 100% to get the textbook flow most people state to keep sps.

exactly. just cuz u can keep a clam doesn't mean u can keep sps, clams are easy, sps are difficult
