Hermit crab with worm inside shell?

I searched but didn’t see anything quite the same. Does anyone know what this worm like thing is? I pulled the crab out into a specimen cup but couldn’t find anything. As soon as I returned him back to the tank, the worm guy showed up again. It’s a pretty new tank and the crabs have been in it for a couple of weeks now.
