Those are zebra hermits, just fancy forms of the blue and red legs, they wont kill fish unless its already dead. Ive had a few of them and they are chill
Cool good to know ive never came across them. They looked huge lol Ive not ever seen a hermit capable of catching a fish but im not a marine seismologist so didn't want to say for sure :)

During a power outage kept a rather large hermit in a five gallon bucket with a few damsels and even in that confined space didn't bother any.

As stated by others. Possibly illness played a role in it's demise.

1. Forget the hermit crab. He’s not the cause of your loss.
2. As stated above try to buy captive bred as much as possible/only.
3. No matter what type of fish you buy you need to learn the art of medicated quarantine if you want to succeed. Not all will agree with me on this one.
4. Research the species you are buying and provide the best care for it.
5. Only by species that are hardy and meant to be in captivity. Some species are not meant for captivity.
6. Lastly it’s not just money you are losing. You are losing a living creature that wanted to live as much as any other in this world.

I removed every single crab 6 years ago. While not the cause of fish death, can and will catch and eat anything thats slow or doesn’t move.

Since removing crabs, unknown Coral deaths and empty snail shells have coincidentally stopped.

If you like them keep them.
I started pulling hermits yesterday because I'm tired of them climbing up and spending the day perched in my acros.

I have yet to experience fish loss. Though my firefish gave me anxiety when it went missing for a few weeks.

I've had hermits and turbo snails die. Definitely sucks because you constantly run through was it your fault or something wrong with the tank. Sometimes things just die naturally.

It was cute at first then I started seeing tissue damage. Not sure if the hermits were physically damaging the coral if it's because they block that part of the coral from getting light because they sit there all day. Tanks without coral to climb on they spend the day in a pile fighting or killing snails lol. I've decided they're pretty much useless, at least for me in larger tanks.

Our firefish is currently missing! We are assuming it is dead in our tank but maybe it is just missing!

I have hermits in my acros all the time.
The acros don’t slime up or lose color or polyp extension.

One thing I have noticed is the hermits appear less interested in perching in acros after I blow all the detritus out with a turkey baster.

I do blow my acros off at least once a day. The hermits appear to just be hanging out on them all day waiting for lights out. I'm just finding them annoying for what little benefit if any I can see they provide. Now they're hanging off of my gorgonian causing the branch to sag and rub on a rock. I'm just tossing them in another tank where there isn't much they can bother.

If you’re buying from an lfs and add to a display without observation and quarantine you’re going to continue seeing a lot of fish mortality

Leopards/timor and other burrowing wrasses are prone to bacterial infections/uronemia/etc and often disappear into the sand bed and are never seen again. Should be kept by experienced aquariusts.

Never buy a fish on impulse from the LFS

Now that I see the picture im not sure what kind of hermits those are still not sure that they could catch a wrasse but im not sure what kind those are so I would take them back just to be on safe side. In that picture those guys look pretty big.
They look really big.
