I'd say 5+ distinct heads make a colony. None of this 2 heads with a third "splitting" into 2 that I see people on facebook selling all the time.

Now, with the actual definition of "colony" this is a rather complex question.
If you get 1 polyp and that 1 polyp turns into 5. I call it a colony. The animal has become stable and established will most likely thrive at this point.

Even if you buy an 18 head colony and move this colony into a new system. It is no longer established and polyps are going to die. Of course, this is true with the colonies original environment. Die off happens. But is most likely to take place when a larger colony is settled and moved.

3 + separate, unique heads for me (it can be a small colony, but that's still a colony).

So many tanks I see on here are frag displays. There are some with colonies. I would say size and head count together has to define it. 4 or 5 small heads is still a frag. I purchased a torch with 2 heads, a hammer with 4 and another with 5. So 7 or 8 decent size heads start making a colony. I am an old time reefer where fist size of most corals were considered a colony. Some of these online sites that will call an SPS a mini colony because it has 4 or 5 branches but is under 2 inches.

A coral colony is made up of more than one polyp. So the answer is two "heads" have become a colony. Same for one inch sps frags. They have multiple polyps, so they have formed a colony. It's either one polyp, or a colony of polyps.

I have 4 categories of coral size. 1 is a booger, which is either 1 polyp or a piece less than an inch, 2 is a frag, with 2-5 polyps or a 1-2 inch piece, 3 is a chunk, 6-10 polyps or 2-4 inches, and finally we have a colony which is either bigger than 4 inches or has 10+ polyps. So I would say that a euphyllia colony needs to have 10 polyps.

by that standard, next time I see a couple walking down the street I’ll say to them “nice colony you two” :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing: :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
That would be as accurate as saying there must be 8 heads to make up a colony :face-with-rolling-eyes: This has turned into people just pulling opinions out of their rear side. You either have a polyp, or a colony (2+) polyps. Not rocket science.
