I started when some people were still using two hose regulators.

lol that's me and my brother. Thats 37 dead lionfish we shot out in Belize. They are a non-native invasive species there. We made ceviche, fritters, fish fingers, pan fried whole fish, sashimi, and grilled lionfish with all of it! Fed the whole family for a little less than a week

When I went for my PADI certification in about 1973 I had already been diving a couple of years in the tropics but the instructor said tropical diving doesn't count at all in New York.
Our visibility is measured in inches and rarely does it get over three feet. On night dives you can see a little more due to the less refraction from the artificial light.
Here if you want to see your watch, you have to put it inside your mask.
My certification dive was in a muddy bay on the south side of Long Island and the visibility was virtually zero. The instructor held your hand to see if you were doing the hand signals correctly.
You always had to swim with a "probe" which we made out of a CB antenna and you held it out in front of you so you don't crash into a rock. The Long Island Sound was made from a receding glacier and left Oldsmobile size rocks all over the place and the bottom is made out of them which makes it great for lobsters and wrecks.
We also used those "probes" to tickle the lobsters out of the holes because you don't want a Northern lobster grabbing your hand because you may not get it back.
Some of those guys get up around 20 lbs. But most are a pound or so.

Lots of fun isn't it. Same in lake Ontario without lobster. Just started my 28th year as a NAUI diver and my 21st year as a NAUI Divemaster. Had the great fortune of diving all over the world. As you can tell, I love taking pics.
From a rig dive on a Flower Gardens trip.

Florida Keys. Probably my favorite domestic spot. Favorite site is the Benwood Wreck. Awesome diversity.
Sea fan with a Yellowtail Snapper I believe.
Spent almost two weeks in the Philippines. Apo Island would be the highlight. Just astounding diversity and color.
Orange spearing mantis. Had just been classified nine years earlier. Missed it by that much.
Gorlock Mantis. I call him the old man. Macro shot doesn't convey how large it was.
I spent almost the entire trip hoping to see a Blue Ring. Found this guy and it was receptive to the camera for a bit and then gave me a display. Talked to a DM later and he identified it as a Poison Ocellate. Every bit as venomous as the Blue Ring.
Peacock mantis shrimp
Nembrotha chamberlaini (I think)
Flamboyant cuttlefish. Wonderful animals. Lunch time! Or dinner I guess.
Nembrotha lineolata mating.
Eggs!!!
Mandarin dragonets mating. Everyone knows these guys. They are amazing in the wild. A more punctual animal you will never find.
Green sea turtle
Hairy squat lobster. Best name ever.
Gurnard lionfish. Apparently pretty rare to see. Had a divemaster come find me and have me take pics.

Assume Camera work. How do you have time to set depth of field, and shutter speed so fast. When I used a niconis with macro lens had a small field goal like attachment and had to get subject right in it. tried it, blacked out under water, claustrophobia is a *****. I can snorkel all day long, literally, but diving is not in the cards sadly. My wife dives and loves it though yet she is not into reef keeping sadly.

Thank you! To your question, the first thing I will say is that with macro I generally have it dialed in at the beginning of the dive and make few adjustments if I can help it. Then I just move the camera towards or away from the subject until my focal point is sharp as I can get it. Wide angle is a different story. For both though, I do my best to make a slow, non-direct approach to the subject. Less chance of creating a threat response. Your sergeant major was probably protecting a nest. Those little fish, along with clowns can really beat you up. LOL.

Hunted them when I was there too..... though I am a wuss and filmed while my son did the spearing-- isn't it beautiful calm diving there!lol that's me and my brother. I live in the Keys so I spend a good amount of time in the water. Scuba certified but normally am free diving while spear fishing. I recently learned there’s mushrooms and zoas that grow here so I’m on a mission to find those! Seen plenty of mantis and pistol shrimp down here which are always fun to watch

Terrified of the ocean so probably never, Maybe this is why I like tanks so much. I'm a great swimmer just something about all that open water makes me very anxious. I tried snorkeling once near a wreck in the Caribbean and didn't like it. I might be able to do it in a shallow lagoon with great visibility. I hope to get over the fear some day, and if I do, diving is next.
