It really depends on type of fish, and where they live in the water column. Im just getting back into reefing after a 12 year hiatus, put together a list of what you would like to keep. Then post and ask for opinions.

Well that depends on whether you are talking about full grown fish or not. The immature of a certain fish were sold in this hobby. They were Goliath Grouper, These guys get about 10’ long and 1200 lbs. So for one of them far less than one.

On the other extreme, barnacle blennies are tiny and they would have a small foot print.

But another consideration is would the fish suffer from mutual aggression. I scuba dive and it is really hard to get close enough to a shark to get a good photo. They are camera shy like Greta Garbo. The only fish that has ever attacked me have been damsel fish. So for one of the aggressive damsels, the answer might be 1.

Also, your filtration, nutrient export, maintenance can have a major effect on the capacity of your tank.

But I would say, about 7 would be safe.... maybe more.

Depends on the type of fish (assuming that 2-3" is the maximum adult size) for swimming zone, activity level, and aggression, and your nutrient export.

What type of fish are you interested in?

How many small 2” to 3” fish 73 gal tank? Red Sea 350?
I contrast the pic we have 11 now all approved by the fish store and they said we could get one or two more. I’m not sure about that. I will document the fish as we not done that.

Thanks for your comments!

If you already have 11 in a tank that size I would not be adding anything else. Hard to gauge size in the photos but you might run into issues as those fish mature.

If we treat your fish as ellipsoids with radius of 2.5in long, 0.5in wide, and 1in tall, then we have 73 gallons * 231 in³/gallon / ((4/3)*π*0.5*0.25*1.25) = roughly 25764.8 fish.

However, that assumes that we blend up the fish and dump them in. If we wish to keep the fish whole, we have a random close pack. While this is trickier to determine for ellipsoids than spheres, I'd say to be on the safe side and go with no more than 64% density, which according to Wikipedia is about where computer simulations have pegged a random packing of spheres.

Therefore, to be on the safe side, I'd start with no more than 16,489 fish, and add additional fish if you don't have any aggression issues or territorial fights.
