1. On average how long does it take to you to get an inch of coral growth on the following coral types:

Acropora - I only have two acros so not exactly a wealth of experience. I got my first one back in February. It arrived cold and leaking and RTN'd so I'm not even sure what it is. I saved two tiny branches and it took a long time to decide if it was going to live or die. My second is a Bali Green Slimer that I received at the beginning of July and it seems to be doing really well. And here's where I'd like to get a definition on an inch of growth. Both my acros seem to like to grow out more than up. The traumatized acro has not really grown much up but has become denser with more polyps all the time. The second acro has been working hard at encrusting the entire frag plug but again, not much up. No idea what this means. Probably have had an inch of growth just not the way you typically think of an inch of growth.

Montipora - I have six montis. One is a year old Starburst cap that never grew but looked healthy until I got dinos and it turned brown and mostly died and is now regrowing very very slowly from a couple polyps. Put it on the 12+ month plan. Then we have my 5 month old Leng Sy cap with zero growth. My Forest Fire digi has been in the tank since the beginning of July and it doesn't seem to have grown upward at all but like the acro it arrived with it's enthusiastically encrusting the frag plug. Then we have my RRC Red Roses cap. It's growing like a weed in two tanks. In just a couple months a small piece I accidentally broke off the original has grown inches and is bigger than the original frag! I have a setosa that initially grew with some enthusiasm but has since put on the brakes. No new growth in months. Finally my encrusting monti that I've had a few months. Maybe a quarter inch? Color is nice, polyps open. No real growth. So it seems aside from the Red Roses I can't grown montis but they look pretty.

2. What do you think is the biggest contributor to your positive SPS Growth?

Apparently growth is not my thing so no answer. I'm just happy to have acros and montis with nice color and polyps that are out and happy every day. Hopefully the growth comes later.

This pink Cadillac has been in my tank about 8 months and the only thing it has done is encrusted the plug.

Stability KH / Light / Flow / Avoid pests are important factors.

Got new one - Acropora Valida

8 months growth on two corals. One a fresh cut frag, one fully encrusted and beginning to grow. Really depends on the coral and it’s maturity, IME. Generally speaking if you’re getting 1/4”-1/2” of vertical growth per month you’re doing pretty good.

I’m a grower not a shower.

Everything changes near the two year anniversary. Acros can take up to a year to base out. They sprout out more after the first year. When you come up on that year two mark most take off.

I am jealous, guys. My tank is a drama queen, having to constantly baby it and battle something. I get good growth for 2-3 months and then something pops up that stunts growth for 5-6 months until I finally figure out whats going on and get the fix rolling. Get 2-3 months of good growth again then boom its a new problem. A never ending cycle. When I do get a good growing period it's probably an inch per 3 months. I have been in the hobby for 20 years, the past 6-8 years have definitely been the hardest, no doubt.

These are my first two acropora bought last week and though it’s too soon to see growth, I’ve seen new polyps.

I see they change the question from SPS growth to acro growth….I’ve only owned a ros for about a month, now. But, I am seeing new polyps start to cover one (Big Blue Monster) while the other hasn’t done much at all (Walt Disney). I assume they have different light and flow requirements, because they’re placed about 4 inches apart, at the same light and flow.

1” per month would be 1 FOOT per year!
For those who voted that way I know a lot of pro Acro coral farmers who would like your secrets!! Lol.
thats easy to achieve with acrows and they dont grow like telephone poles and each branch adds to the overall growth. so if you add it all up an inch a month isnt that much really.
