Hey guys!

Here’s my current fish stocking list that will soon transfer to the 260 gallon tank:

The yellow fish:
Yellow tang
Foxface
Orange shoulder tang
Midas blenny

The red fish
Flame hawkfish

The blue fish:
Blue tang

The gray fish:
Bellus angel
Lamarck angel
Naso tang

Miscellaneous fish:
Clarkii x2 (black, white, yellow/orange)
Melanurus wrasse

Size is very important in this. All the yellow fish are the brightest, and the largest! The blue tang is a tiny baby tang and the flame hawkfish is pretty small and perches on the side glass.

So basically, it’s HEAVILY dominated by bright, large, yellow fish with the secondary “color” being gray from the gray section.

I was trying to use the science of the color wheel to balance the fish out. I wasn’t sure if I should add purple fish predominately, or if I should add more reds and blues?

PS: my tank can handle a few more fish. Obviously the fish will be researched before adding. I just wanted to hear from the people who enjoy dealing with aesthetics to help me balance out the dominance in the tank.

Knowing what colors will balance out the yellows will impact what fish I will add.

If I want to add more purples:
Purple fire fish
Lubbocks fairy wrasse
Royal gramma
Purple dottyback
Purple basslets

If I need more blues:
Chromis damsels

If I need more reds:
Standard fire fish
Carpenter flasher wrasse
Dispar anthias (a bit in between orange and red tbh)

See where I’m going with this? All these fish are compatible in my tank, but not all together as the bioload will be too much. The main goal is to lessen the harshness of yellow.

So, using the color wheel, which section (blues, purples, or reds) should be added to balance yellow? :)

I spoke to my artist friend and she said red and blues will compliment yellow. I completely agree with her because I think purple will make the yellow stand out even more!

I agree with you all, but I honestly don't know if you would class my tank as balanced but my fish are mainly yellow, hmmmm well OK the main fish are yellow, with 2 tangs and a yellow coris wrasse I have a coral beauty, clowns, purple firefish and purple coraline algae too, I have green zoa's red zoa's a blue/purple zoa but here is a picture of my tank and you can see the yellows against everything else, I also have red and green mushrooms its a very Christmassy looking tank I have to admit :D but the yellows against the purples do look very nice

I agree with a harem of blue/green chromis ($7-$10 each) and I would consider adding to the chromis a male and 3 or 4 female lyretail anthias ($35-$40 each)
Great color and movement. But the anthias require multiple small feedings per day.

Ever thought of color balancing not just with fish but also inverts?
Some cleaner shrimp/coral banded will provide red
Some co co worm will also add red. And a pink sea cucumber to add to the mix
A nice bubble til anemone with maroon clownfish will add red and pink
Also consider some lps for color mix- torch or hammer for green and gold, some lobo or acan can add red and orange as well
