I'm in the process of setting up a new tank and will be including an Aqua Ultraviolet 57w Class UV Sterilizer on one of my return pumps. I'd like to mount it horizontally so that I can readily get the bulb and quartz tube out for maintenance. However it is recommended that the output fitting point upwards so that air can escape and the chamber with the UV bulb will remain underwater. The problem is that the inlet will also be pointing up and it seems like air could get trapped in the plumbing connected to the inlet. There will also be additional bends in the return plumbing increasing head pressure on the pump.

Have others had any issues with doing it that way? Do I need to be concerned about this?

If you have the outlet pointing up it will be enough to have the outlet half an inch over the inlet.
