You need to think back to earth science and mohs scale of hardness. You need something equal or less hard than the wall but more hard than the soft play
Anything metal will risk scraping the wall
So a plastic scraper that has an angled edge like the one posted above is ideal
Paly grows on a mat and once you get it started it should be easy
