So my pair of Ascension Gobies who I rarely see outside of feeding time bred & the fry hatched tonight! I don’t have anything on hand to take care of the babies right now & there are hundreds of them. I also have a pair of Ruby Red Dragonettes & the female has gotten pretty fat, very quickly.
I didn’t really have any huge aspirations of breeding fish but I’d like to save these babies if I can!
What types of equipment is needed to take care of these little guys?
I have frozen cubes of baby brine shrimp but these guys are hardly larger than the BBS. I also have a 2 1/2g tank with a HOB whisper filter & a small 50w heater. Would any of that work for these guys, even short term, while I can get the correct supplies?
Would a breeder net inside their same tank be a better idea? I don’t even know how I’m going to get them out of my tank. I have a net, of course but I just imagine them getting stuck in the netting & hurting them.
Lights are already off for the night (which I understand is when they like to hatch) so I’m not too worried about them immediately being eaten by the other fish. Maybe I should be??
Other fish in this tank: pair of clowns & a bicolor Dottyback.

Is this goby? 0:53 in the video? It seems to be a pair and I´m very interesting to here your experiences. Do the babies look like a fry or are they larvaes?

Sincerely Lasse

Hi Lasse! Yes, they look the same as the ones in your video & have the same type of behavior as well. I have rarely seen them swimming any way other than upside down. They are such funny, cryptic little guys.
After doing more reading on fish breeding last night & this morning, they were definitely in the larval stage & not fry just yet. Unfortunately, I was not able to save any of them this morning. I had planned to scoop them out with a cup and then replace whatever water was needed in the DT. I don’t see any of them today though. I’ll have to check again tonight as I suppose some of them could be hiding in my Kenya trees or Xenia?
Anyhow, here are some of the only pictures I have of my pair. The two best ones were from when I was acclimating them back in November.
I’m going to stop by my LFS in a little while to see what I need to handle these babies a little better in the future. I would love to raise some of the babies if I could! Same goes for my Ruby Red Dragonets. My girl is about to pop! :)
Please excuse the very unhappy BTA in the one photo... she was bleached at the time but is making a stellar comeback now!

I have had mine since 2 years back. I set in 4 and I know for sure that I have at least 3 now. Its one of my favorites in the tank. If they produce larvae - it could be a tricky fish to bread. Ask your LFS for brachionus and pelagic algae (in order to breed the brachionus)

@Lasse i just wanted to share with you… I got a couple new pictures of my pair last night. The female is looking very pregnant again or maybe just fat? I have to wait for the lights to go out to really get a good view of these guys. They love their cave!
I hope yours are still doing well!

@Lasse they spawned again and the tank was full of babies tonight! Hundreds of them. I first thought my ATO failed and they were micro bubbles. I did get a video, I hope you’ll be able to see it! Unfortunately, my cleaner shrimp was having a feast. :(

A couple really hard to see pics… they’re so tiny & dart around so quickly.

Congratulation

As a saltwater species - they look rather large. i think that this is a species that probably can be possible to bring up with proper food.

I´m not sure how many is still left in my aquarium but there have been situations in the past when I thought that i have lost some of them - suddenly they show up all 4.

Do you know how long time the parents guarded the eggs?

Sincerely Lasse

You will a small tank with the sides and bottom blacked out, air stone, and heater. To feed them Copepods will be key. Try Apocyclops panamensis, Parvocalanus crassirostris, possibly rotifers or a mix of all. Feed live phyto to the copepods and the copepods to the larvae. Keep us updated and good luck!

Ideally you would want to remove the pair to there own smaller tank so it would be easier to catch the larva. Which in itself may be very difficult, and there’s a chance they may take a while to spawn after the shock of moving to a new home. There are ways to catch larva with a trap that uses light to attract them. Good luck. Following along.

I will have to watch more closely in the coming weeks. I will be moving the larger fish in their tank to another tank before the end of this month & then I will be able to keep a better eye on them. I hope to be able to start to predict their schedule better and possibly try raising some of the young. They were surprisingly large to me as well. In person and up close, they really just looked like very tiny versions of their parents.

Very exciting. You don't have to catch all the babies. Remember raising them takes a lot of small food. So even 10 is a good place to start.
Once I decide to try raising them, I will definitely have to read through more of your threads for tips! I love seeing your updates on the babies you’re raising. :)

That’s the plan over the next month or so. I have an Evo that’s been running for quite a while that I want to move them into once their larger tank mates move to their new home this coming month. I think they’ll do better in there & who knows, I might actually see them other than at feeding time!
