I am pretty new but saw this tank that someone was selling, is it a good deal?

If you put your rock and fish in a large trash can, then you wouldn’t need to premix your saltwater initially. You could fill your tank with RODI water and then mix salt directly in the tank. Get the salt, heat and filtration all figured out and then just transfer the live rock and fish.

Here are a couple of medium size container options.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do. I’m really glad you are trying to plan everything out first.

Thanks for the idea! I think that is what I am most likely going to do, I can go pickup a 20 or 30 gallon storage bin ( I found someone selling 2 30 gallon ones for $25 on marketplace) and put the fish in there with a sponge filter and some rocks. I will just add RODI directly into the tank like you said and then add salt after. I will be using reef crystals so I will have to get 3 reef crystals bags right? They each say 50 gallons on them so I will dump 2 full bags and a little of the third one.

Sounds like a plan. I know you said you were not going to use the existing sand, but are you going to use any sand at all?

Not sure if the salt mixing directions are accurate. Just be sure to put less than what it says because it easier to add salt than to add water (if your tank is already full).

Well I will most likely use sand but I would need to get some. I have about 40lbs of it in my main tank right, would I be able to transfer that over?

Noo let your tank fallow.

rinse and move it later if you want to use it but don’t expose the fish to it now.

Also, the guy said that he can just give me fish bags so I won't need an aeroter/heater for the ride, I think that can work and then when I get home, I can put them in a container probably 20 gallon container.

I don’t know if I would bag them for that long of a drive.. fish that are shipped are bagged with oxygen.

They would probably be in the bags awhile while you packed everything then the drive, maybe gas, then your house and floating.

I mean it is about a 1 hour drive, probably would go in the morning so less traffic so even if you include time in for traffic, maybe 1 hour 30 min max. Including the floating time, maybe 2 hours at max most likely 1and a half hour. If you include packing time, thats maybe 2 hours max. So 2 hours max. If anything 3 hours.

It might be fine but I personally wouldn’t. You’re trapping them in cups of water with only regular air. Most of those fish are heavy oxygen demand fish.

But I really don’t know, never tried it. Just worries me but I have no basis to know if it’s a real worry. I always put mine in a 5g bucket and a battery air pump. @Jay Hemdal do you know how long a fish could be in a bag with just air?

I would probably do the pump and bucket and would also save as much water as you can; that way there will be no shock to fish or coral and LR while they are living in the container/trash can while you get the main tank ready.

What do you mean save as much water? From where?

He is saying to bring the water in the tank with.

I personally don’t do this when I move. I just use all new water tbh.

Would bringing old water help with the tank maturing and stabilizing? Also I decided to just stay with bucket and aerator plan. Do I need to bring a heater?

For God’s sake man, buy the thing. Use a battery pump. If you don’t, I may drive down from NY and buy it myself.
Buy the tank? Yeah I will I just want to prepare, tbh I haven’t even asked my parents lol but im sure they will be fine with it as they would know that this is a good deal.
