Tank is a 250 gallon mixed reef.

Looking into fish to stock the tank with, but I’ve hit a wall with what I want to add because the big colorful fish are mostly non reef safe.

First, I will start off with what’s in my tank right now:
LPS
SPS
Soft corals
Snails
Urchin
Starfish
Tridacna Clams (my favorite)
Anemones

No fish yet (currently fallow and will QT everything wet)

I know for certain that I want some tangs in the tank, but I feel most tangs are muted in color and don’t add the “pop” that I’m looking for.

I’ve had a few non reef safe fish in the past, and one fish that always caught non reefer’s attention was a dog face puffer.

I’m looking at harlequin tusks but I don’t think I’d feel comfortable with losing my clams.

I’m looking for medium to large fish that will catch attention from friends, family, and reefers.

What do you recommend?

Achilles
Blond naso
Blue tang
Yellow tangs
Edit: added sohal to list after reading response.

These are only about 3” but they are show stoppers. They are actually pretty reef safe, they will annoy SPS but they don’t eat it.

Some of the fancier tangs are always great choices. Like black, gem, achillies, chevron and sohal to name a few.

As for angels, anything in the genicanthus family is reef safe and can be large show stoppers. The dwarf angels are also beautiful but dont get large and may nip at coral.

Personally, this is my favorite and i guess what id call my show fish

Wow. I never knew about those reef safe angels! That’s perfect. Thank you so much!
These are some of my favorite genicanthus

And heres a good breakdown and all the info you need to know about them

I never would recommend A. sohal for a home aquarium, unless you have a huge tank/pond. They get so big and aggressive. Attached is a not-so-great pic I recently took of one at a public aquarium. It would estimate it at around 15 inches.

What is it? Looks like a colorful filefish. No issue with softies/fleshy LPS? Seems like those are usually at higher risk of being eaten than SPS with fish

What do you recommend?
Some risk to snails and maybe starfish, but blue throat triggers seem to be the more tame species of trigger and are gorgeous.

Can't go wrong with a hippo tang.

Marine bettas have a cool pattern.

A dwarf lion might be OK as well.

Foxface

Leopard wrasse (note that these are tricky to get eating, and don't ship well because they are finnicky, but man are they pretty)

Thank you. I’m going to skip the sohal.

Here’s my updated list:

Blue tang
Yellow tang
Naso tang
Powder blue tang
Achilles tang
Orange shoulder tang
Magnificent fox face
Tomato clownfish
Harlequin tusk
Sand sifting goby

I think this will be my complete stocking list. I would rather have a few large fish rather than a clutter of tiny fish.

Someone rate my stocking plan.

Orange spotted filefish. Their natural diet is the mucus from millepora polyps. They pay zero attention to lps & softies. Their mouths are like little straws so they can’t bite and tear fleshy coral. They’ll peck at SPS.

No angels!!!? I believe a regal angelfish is definitely a showstopper for any tank.

my personal recommendation:

flame angel
Red Sea Regal angel
Achilles tang
Red Sea butterflyfish
Powder blue
Moorish idol
Pair of true percs.
Sunburst or lyretail x3

personally I have never seen my angelfish picking at corals ever, but that’s just me.
