Was a rough weekend for the tank.

First and most important, I must sadly report that Skyler, our Midas Blenny, has passed to the great unknown. Like most of my fish losses, he simply vanished one day. A bloom of Cyanobacteria makes me pretty sure he met his demise in the tank. Nothing was found outside of the tank and there is nowhere for a carcass to hide in my minimalist living room anyway. I found no remains in the tank, but the hermits all look well fed.

it makes me very sad as Skyler was a long time resident and a beautiful fish with an incredible personality. The only inhabitant that could have killed him is the female Clownfish. It is possible. For months she has tolerated Skyler nipping at her and let him be. She may have gotten fed up. A smart reefer also reminded me that Blennies are not long lived and we got Skyler at 2.5” over a year ago.

Whatever happened, the tank seems a bit empty and less colorful. Skyler will be greatly missed.

Looking ahead, I am considering a Lawnmower Blenny. Less colorful, but typically an interesting personality. I also have a lot of nuisance food ready for one.

Okay, moving on, the second issue is the Montipora corals have pretty much all slowly died. No obvious reason, just slowly faded away. The Spongodes and the German Blue Digitata were barely hanging on, but the recent Cyanobacteria bloom I mentioned blanketed them which is not a good sign.

I did an extra water change this morning and replaced carbon after the Midas disappeared. Hoping that helps.

Turning to the positive, the remaining fish all seem to be doing very well. The anemone looks bigger each day. Crabs and worms are happy. The Turbo and Trochus snails have all been killed by the crabs. The Ceriths seem to be less tasty to them and are continuing to reproduce at an alarming rate. I must have seen at least 30 tiny ones while cleaning the tank today.

Very sorry to hear this, Brian. Skyler is a big part of the reason I got Tidus. Absolutely beautiful fish. Great tribute, and good to see you moving on to the positives.
