You have done a very good job with this so far!

Why are you making excuses for it not being wet?

:p

Ha! Peer pressure!

Honestly, this tank is so long coming, no one wants it wet more than I do. That said, I plan to continue taking it slow. The next stages of water filling, adding all the equipment and letting it all test run will be in slow stages. I really just want to get to what I feel is the most important stage of any setup: getting the rest of the live rock in there so it can sit and mature for a while.

Had a couple of pictures from RAP NY.

Daughter posing in the obligatory sign shot

This was (if recalling correctly) at the Absolutely Fish stand

Millennium Falcon and At-At encrusted with Cyphastrea (with my crude color correction). I am not into aquarium ornaments really, but they were pretty cool to see.

Best conversation I had was with the owner of my favorite LFS which is very nice.

Hello,

@NY_Caveman I have a sigh of major relief. Because If this one was broken, I was personally going to just buy you a tank from anywhere but then so you would have one. Of course you would pick it out.

So far the tank looks just amazing and what’s gonna happen to poor Aerial? If you leave her on the stand she is gonna be a squished mermaid under that tank lol. Have you decided what kind of sand if any yet?

Also congrats to your daughter for graduating elementary school, trust me that is a huge huge achievement. Also she looks like she is very very interested in this hobby. She is well on her way to being a very classy young lady.

I was also curious if you have decided on what kind of reef you were going to do. Wasn’t sure if it was mixed, or just sps, or lps, etc. I know you probably have listed, but been soooo busy I honestly have forgotten, (which of it makes you feel any better, I literally forgot how to spell my name the other day). I was writing a rx for a patient lol and when they asked for my name etc to find me again I said Oh it’s doctor umm umm wait lol what did you ask me again? Your name oh it’s Sara. Except I spell it with Sarah. Yeah work has not let me live that one down yet. At least the they were pretty laid back. The nurse told them I never forget the important stuff but she said they had me convinced my name was Kate beckinsale for two weeks) (so not true she made that up). Anyway sorry if I forgot some of the important (see above lol) information. But so excited to see it :) yay

Funny, I believe you. I could never accept, of course. The offer is beyond generous.

Thank you! My two daughters are quite different, but both wonderful. The best thing is they mostly get along very well.

I was also curious if you have decided on what kind of reef you were going to do.
Mixed describes it best. I did write a little about these thoughts early in this thread. However, my ideas have evolved as time has passed. The current plan includes an anemone on one good sized island, so in a 45 gallon that is limiting. I would like to think I could have an SPS island and some LPS along the bottom, but that might be too ambitious. The tank will be bare bottom with a piece of black Starboard which is also livestock limiting. Inverts and fish will be (in order, excluding CUC) 2 Cleaner Shrimp, a Pink Streaked Wrasse, an Entacmaea quadricolor anemone, 2 Clarkii Clowns and last a Midas Blenny. Perhaps.
I literally forgot how to spell my name the other day

I work in live television and once had an anchor reading teleprompter introduce herself as a different anchor.

Hello,

Lol oh you always make me giggle. I do have a nice rose bubble tip anemone that’s driving me batty. He will come on his own Little Rock (it’s maybe 1/2 pound and not very big). However when he stretches out, he is a good five or even six inches in diameter and has amazing color. I have two now and so hoping they don’t split. He has never moved from his light and gets pretty good flow. He does get pretty good light also and he is on the sand bed. I can send pics of him to you as well.

Lol sorry it’s kinda hard to return a tank when I use your own address as the return address. :).

Dude ! this is amazing ! so much detail !

TIME IN: 1.5 Months

Designing the Aquascape

My plan for the JBJ Rimless 30 is two long diagonal islands. The idea is to create nice depth and great flow.

The purple is live rock and the grey is dry shelf rock. I used Microsoft Excel to arrange simple shapes in a kind of “Colorforms” way. I like Excel because it is easy to use and the underlying grid can be useful to approximate measurements. Each cell (little square) is 1 square inch in these screen grabs.

I have tried it a few ways and like this layout best. The room placement will make make the front and left side of the aquarium fully viewable. The challenge will be getting small pieces of diverse aquacultured live rock.

In this version I tried the limits of live rock sizes. Could it work with three large rocks? What would be the maximum size?

I think of these images not as what I will exactly do, but as a guide to my idea. The success of the final reefscape will not be judged by its resemblance to these crude images.

Way in the future I envision the longer, taller back island will feature several different Montipora species. The shorter, front island and across the front of the tank will have LPS species. Probably no soft coral, maybe a couple of choice Acropora much later.

I added some more simple shapes to the aquascape above to help me get a feel for colors, what would fit and how I might space out some of the possible aggressors.

I will post livestock plans in a later post, but since intended livestock is important at every stage, I wanted to mention what I was thinking. Expect more on that and equipment choices soon.
