Amazing idea ...
here in Canada we don’t have any reefs anywhere close .
it would be cool to look into growing to replenish lost and damaged reefs .

Even got my wife on board, I'm going to start talking with other organizations and see how to get this off the ground.

My wife is suggesting I do the same, I'm going to look into certification as well.
Padi ...is the best ..
and recognized everywhere ..

there are many others but depending on where you travelled to , they might require retraining .

I’m assuming your wife dives .
I was excited ... covid slowed everything and delayed everything for last Summer.

She got certified in California, she used to go diving all the time. Hopefully covid doesn't make this hard to do lol.

I have SSI certification and that has been no problem anywhere I've gone. Received my training in Cairns, QLD.

what if I used those methods to collect and catalog as many corals as possible with the sole goal of reseeding the ocean if circumstances ever changed?

You'd be competing with a multi multi multi million dollar operation know as:

If you toured their facilities, you'd soil your underwear.

No, ORA has a slightly different goal. They want to propagate different species to sell into the hobby. That means they're going to be naturally inclined towards profitable corals. Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with that- their whole setup is great either way. But they're not going about things the same way as a purely conservation-based organization would- pure conservation interest would mean trying to preserve every vulnerable species, regardless of its commercial value.

Interesting discussion, and great to see enthusiasm for conservation of wild reefs. That's what led me into the hobby. But there does seem to be a disconnect between wild reef restoration/conservation and the hobby, this despite the fact that folks in both sides know a whole lot about what it takes to keep corals alive. Would be very interesting to find a way for them to collaborate. Good luck!

Here are some interesting links:

So far I've gotten no luck getting in touch with anyone. Tried to get in touch with some places in Tennessee but its a Neverending chain of general emails with little to no info on talking to anyone meaningful.
