I have been using pantyhose for media bags for years. They are cheaper than the mesh bags, let less particles through them, and are reuseable if you use zip ties to tie off the ends. If you go to the dollar store you can get them really cheap too.

I haven't used tube socks for filter socks, but I have DIYed filter socks by sewing polyfelt from Walmart into filter bags...

I have used sachet bags found in the craft department with no problems, small mesh and come with a draw string.

I've had to use nylon's many times and for several years now, it's worked well and I've even used em in my uncles tank.
