Trying to hook up my Varios 8 with 1 1/4 connections to my 1 inch flex tube return.

What would be the easiest way to step down to 1 inch? Any suggestions is appreciated!

Adapting down to a 1” barb fitting will kill flow. Regardless, that’d be the best way to go if you have flow to spare; otherwise, I’d get a foot or so of 1 1/4” ID vinyl hose and slip the existing 1” hose as far down into one end as you can and the barb you already have into the other. You would have to put some kind of band clamp on the hose-inside-hose connection to be sure it didn’t blow off.

May look into this. Not worried about flow. I prefer to oversize my equipment and run them at 1/3 power.

I know it’s been a while but I’m facing the same issue. Should I just use a 1inch silicone and try to force it around the 1.25? Maybe even scrape some of the thickness off from the inside of the silicone.

It will most likely leak if scraped, and it could be heated up with a hair dryer and forced on but could split down the road.
I recommend purchasing the right size tube with a proper clamp.

My recommendation is don't reduce.
It is crazy how much flow is actually reduced when even the next sized smaller pipe is used.
I had plumed my Varios 8 with one inch and was lucky to get 850gph.
Replumbed with the 1.25 and run at an average of 1250-1300gph
I have a overall head height of 64 inches a check valve two 90's and one 45 wide open with NO strainer on the end.

Agreed. The frictional losses associated with stepping down at the fitting are almost negligible compared to what is lost in the 1” piping in the return. You are losing far more in your return lines than in that one small section of fitting. Certainly, every bit matters, but if you are talking about a couple inches, it won’t materially matter how you get from one to the other.

Just to give you an idea, I just sized piping and pumps for my new 150, and flow loss when stepping down from 1.25” to 1” piping was between 15% and 30%, depending on which pumps I spec’d. A single elbow or barb fitting like that will make a difference of <1%.
