Where would it be??

Assuming you could telecommute/work remotely.

Only two requirements:
  1. It must be in an affordable area.
  2. It must be within 30-45 mins of a decent airport. I.e. I need to receive weekly livestock shipments from Los Angeles, so no more than 1 layover from there.

What is "affordable"?

If you can handle the heat in the summer, the Palm Springs area has affordable houses (compared to Los Angeles and Orange Counties). Winter is wonderful. LAX and Long Beach are about 100 miles away, so a bit more than 45 minutes. Palm Springs airport might connect to LAX (not sure).

What is "affordable"?

Basically, pay $250-300k for a 4 bedroom, 2+ bathroom home with a 2 car garage. 1,800+ sq ft.

And yes, I know I just eliminated the entire west coast. And probably most of the east coast as well. ;)

I'd be OK living in the SE U.S. somewhere, but would be open to other affordable options as well. :)

And it has to be within 30 minutes drive from my house. :p

Your new house

I know, I know. It is too big, too far under budget, and you have to deal with the hassle of an outdoor storage shed. But if you can look past that.....

Palm Springs area is in that ballpark and you can get relatively newer homes. Mine is 3 bedroom, 2car garage, about 1900sqft, gated community and about ten years old. I think the same model up the street just sold for $240k(ish). You could get more rooms and a third car garage for under $300K. Mountains nearby...Pacific Ocean a couple hours away...Colorado River a couple hours away going East and San Diego about the same going SouthWest. There's not a ton to do out here, but depends on what your looking for. My younger self would probably have been bored. My older self is fine with it.

Ah! We have beautiful Lake Tahoe and many smaller lakes within a two hour drive. We also have 24 hour liquor sales, casinos and no state tax. Going east, we have the Black Rock dessert. Can't forget the world famous Mustang Ranch:eek:!

Riverside CA wouldn't be a terrible option either. A bit closer than Palm Springs... And not surface of the sun hot in summer..

But I am biased. I live in Orange County.. Birthplace of RAP, tons of LFS, one of the best clubs in the country with SCMAS, and under 30 mins to the beach or mountains...

You pay for that luxury though.. Around my place, what you describe is $500K+

Get here before October though and you'll get to see the new digs of OC RAP. Anaheim Hilton. Literally across the street from Disneyland..

Double your price and I would live in the Florida Keys. Marathon has an airport.

I've lived all over the US (as well as in Europe) with the military. When I retired, I settled down in Clarksville, TN. Tennessee is absolutely beautiful...nice summers and mild winters! Clarksville in about 30-35 minutes from Nashville, TN and about 40 minutes from the Nashville airport. Also, the people in Tennessee are some of the friendliest I've ever encountered in all my worldly travels!

I'm originally from Ohio...but no plans on going back! Too freakin' cold...

Also...they have a nice reef club community...MTRC...that seems pretty active! Clarksville has a reef store as well as several within an hour around the Nashville surrounding areas!

BTW...very economical for housing with great communities at all price ranges! Great cost of living as well.

I would have to pick Aruba or Antigua. I could snorkel and I would take up scuba diving. Hoping when I retire.

That would be awesome...but those places kind of blows that "economical" thing way out of the water, lol.
