I had a chance to speak with Insurance Agent today regarding my aquarium and what homeowners insurance covers. The equipment is covered in case of a fire or theft. The equipment is not covered in case the tank breaks and damages the lights, skimmer, pumps, etc. The fish and corals are never covered.

Is there insurance out there that covers aquarium equipment, fish, or coral in case of a tank breaking?

Mine covers everything but the livestock, including damage to the house if it were to spring a leak. Each carrier is going to be different. Definitely something to ask about when shopping for coverage.

May I ask who your Insurance carrier is?

My insurance through State Farm also covers everything except livestock. They are the only insurance company I could find that didn't hesitate about covering the tank/equipment in the case of a leak or blow out.

My HOI agent told me that if it malfunctions and causes damage it's covered including the tank, just not livestock. If I walk up to it with a baseball bat and smash it, nothing is covered.

We have Geico and yes tank, stand and equipment is covered.
Our Flood ins will cover the equipment and tank as well.
A few went through that event with Harvey and if equipment was not older than 2 years they got granted 100%.

Is that a special rider or just part of the regular policy?

It was explained to be a part of the policy. However, I don’t find any wording, for or against, coverage of an aquarium.
Just make sure what ever happens gets reported as an accident such as you "fell into the side of the tank" because spontaneous failures from manufacturers defects will make them reluctant.

I have renter's insurance and it will cover damage to the dwelling IF the owner sues me for it. Other than that nothing. It's from a branch of Progressive.
