Hello,

So my nem decided to take a tank tour. And he is diwcovering the glass now. For the sake of safety pumps are off. I turn them on every hour in a while. I was wondering if it is a good time that i take him out split it for future sharing among my commmunity here in Northern Iraq.

Your help and support is highly appreciated.

If the nem hasn’t found a happy spot I wouldn’t cut it.

Thanks for the advice, its the only nem I have and i have had it for over a year now and dont want to risk of loosing it. thats why I want to have couple of them so that I can share with friends here as well.

Cheers!

Perfect time to cut it. Trying to remove a nem from its "happy spot" will increase the chance of injury and infection, and stress the animal out.

It's super easy. Get your fresh razor blade (a hair shaper blade is best - do not use a tool replacement blade). Grab a credit card, and gently peel it from the glass. Place nem on cutting board, and make a single pass with the razor, cutting it through the mouth. Place it back in the water immediately. I like to keep my cuts in a basket....

There's always the risk of cutting it and one or both sides end up dying. A lot of people will tell you to attempt it because 1) they've done it with successful results or 2) they've got nothing to lose and want to see you do it.

Just keep in mind that some BTAs don't split and they don't like being split. Others split frequently and don't mind being cut in half.

Hey @D-Nak - any indicators that can help determine if a nem will be "ok" with being cut? Anything that can be done once cut, to improve the chances for survival?

Thank you - Nathan

There are no clear physical indicators. Nems that naturally split are typically ones that can be cut. You can try to stress your nem a bit and see if it splits on its own. If it does, once it recovers you can try to cut one of the new nems.

Hey i dont think having your pumps off is a good idea, its better if you can cover them up with something so the anemone cant get in. Anemone's will keep moving if you turn of the flow because they really like flow If you keep changing its enviroment by turning the pumps on and off he won't be able to find a happy place. I personally wouldn't split my BTA because the risk reward ratio isn't that great IMO.

I would let it split by itself should it decide to do so. If it doesn't split on its own it might not belong to a strain that formes clones. In that case, cutting it may do more harm than good.
