My nitrate and ammonia levels appear perfect after only a week of cycling my tank (pics attached). I’m confused by the nitrite level. “Clear” wasn’t a color option on the scale and I’m unsure if that’s normal. Is this normal?

I plan on testing myself again this weekend and then taking a sample to the LFS to have them test as well.

This param no longer matters in reefing even though you’ve read it does, simply disregard. You’re ready to reef. Whether it’s positive, or negative, doesn’t matter any more the issue has been found neutral in all reef start dates. not anything bad can happen if nitrite is present in the new tank. It doesn’t alter any animals you can keep at all, simply retire the test and never run it again.

How much ammonia did you use, and what bacteria just to clarify if you’ve actually cycled it, but it looks like it.

The only things I used is caribsea live sand, live rock and a bottle of bio-spira. I’ve been feeding 3 small hermit crabs and 1 emerald crab twice a day. The guy I spoke with at the LFS recommended throwing them in and giving them a pinch of food, twice a day.

have your water re-checked at a trusted LFS which does not use API test kits. API are notorious for false readings and have let many reefers down hence the low price. You may have a false reading.

The food is an ammonia source. If ammonia is zero and you're registering nitrates, you're good. Nitrite isn't as harmful to fish as ammonia and should disappear quickly.

Edit: I do agree with vetteguy above me, verify that ammonia reading to be certain.

As long as you’ve got real live rock in a decent amount it’s good, no matter if you added bacteria or not. Happy reefing :)

As an experienced reefer, what do you check and how often do you check it?

Do you only check salinity? How often?
