Hello all
My LFS accidentally gave me this big crab. Is it safe for a reef tank with fish and coral. Sorry for the bad pictures, it doesn't want to come out. It has blue eyes and reddish claws. Heres a video.

Not safe for coral.
Generally hermit crabs of that size have the possibility of eating and or disturbing coral.
Yeah its kinda big, the shell is a bit smaller than baseball but the crab it self is smaller. I called the shop they told me its a blue legged hermit crab, doesnt have blue legs though

A crab that big can cause some damage without intending to. I've got blue-knuckles in turbo shells and a couple of striped hermits in knobby-creeper shells, and they can knock over a glued coral just passing by. They're not attacking the coral, but . . .

Trust no crab ever!
Much safer and are not required.

Thanks guys, he's moved to an empty extra QT tank I have that I intended to use for a frag tank but no more it seems. Will return to LFS next visit

Im 99% sure its a calcinus gaimardii, we have those at the saltwater store i work at. and im pretty sure i have 1 of them in my main tank. They are harmless to corals, ive never heard of coral eating hermit crabs unless you would get one of those big hermit crabs.
But yes the bigger the hermit crab is the more it could accidently move next to a coral and push it over without intending to do so.

Disagree
Even if your comment doesn't include acro crabs.
Worst case scenario you take the bad one out and either put it in the sump or give it to LFS.
Although I'm a little biased because I find crabs rather entertaining.
