Hi, I was wondering if you think this is dinoflagellates or something else.
Thanks!

There are a number of things that that could be. Dino’s, chrysophyte, cyano...

Pic in white light will help, but pic of what you are dealing with under a microscope would be best.

Different microbes are treated very differently, even certain strains of Dino’s have different treatments.

There isn’t really anything to see right now as everything went away last night which I understand is a sign of dinos.

If something grows back later today I will get a picture.

Yes, sign of Dino’s.

Get your nitrate up to about 10, phosphate up to about 0.1 to help other microbes outcompete the Dino’s. You want some green algae growing on the glass.

UV in tank will help you clear it since they leave the substrate at night. No need for an expensive one, you can use a green killing machine as a temporary uv (not good long term, but you won’t need it long term).

Edit: goal for UV size is at least 1 watt per 3 gallons

Ok, size of my tank is 29 gallons. I need around 10 watts. The green killing machine has a 9 or 24 watt. Should I go a little under or way over?

Is there a reason why I wouldn’t use the UV light permanently if I get one.

Will nitrates of 10 harm any of the tank inhabitants?

How do I get them up to 10.

I had gotten the 24 watt for my 60 gallon.

Then I also used the 24 watt in my 10 gallon and the Dino’s (Ostreopsis) were gone in a day. It didn’t heat up my water either. That would be the only thing I worry about is heat.

the green machine is not made for saltwater. My impeller pin in the pump rusted after 2 months. Others have had issues with high antimony after using it a long time.

Ok so it’s been a while, I final got uv sterilizer into the tank today. We will see what happens.

I did a two day black out. The only thing that happened was one of my fish jumping into the back and died of the filter floss.

Should I leave it on 24/7?

Also a side not. I have had a bucket of saltwater sitting for a week or two. It has a pump in it moving the water. Is it still good. It has some floating stuff and a ring around the top?

Sorry about the fish, that sucks.

UV is good to use 24/7

water should be fine to use. Check the salinity and your other parameters.

but if dealing with Dino’s a lot of people have luck by holding off on water changes. I didn’t do any until they were gone.

So after a couple days it appears to be getting better but there still there. I put the sterilizer in the back chamber 1. Not sure it is getting enough of the bad stuff. Also should I take out the foam filter?

This is the sterilizer I got.
