Try and grab rounded fins which are females. The one pictured is a male. Also grab as small as possible

Why should they be grabbed as small as possible though? Is it because smaller ones will adapt better and be hardier?

Yes. My three, two females and a male all get along with tank mates. Years ago when I had a trio but with a large male, when it was mating time he got very aggressive
