Noticed some brown flesh with “holes “ this morning before lights on. Is this the start of brown jelly disease? Normally I’ve seen this flesh be clearish white.

Can’t see it on my phone, but usually bjd manifests with polyps not opening fully and continues with BJ smothering the head/ skeleton. If you think you have a problem having Cipro on hand for treatment.

Good to know, so it isn’t usually on the flesh on the stem?

I've had it where the first symptom was a gradual thinning of the flesh around the stem. I've also had it where the slime showed first and then the rest progressed.

When in doubt, Chemiclean.

Here is another pic with the lights on. It’s strange because it looks like the flesh is more ripped than degrading?

My torch did this when trying to split but it also went through stress right after it began to split. Tissue receded heavily. It’s recovering now. Not sure what it was

Not BJD but recession and likely due to location with low light and flow. These guys do best at higher tank level where it receives required light and water flow. Gradually elevate it daily and assure calcium is not less than 380 and Nitrate and phos Not elevated as well as salinity

Thank you for your comment. It gave me an ah ha moment — so it isn’t it’s location or it’s general flow (it’s been in this location and growing multiplied heads, etc for over a year); however, on Saturday I put my pumps up to 100% for 2 minutes while dosing calcium carbonate and spraying the sandbed. I imagine that was too intense and probably ripped the flesh. Hopefully it can make a full recovery.

Good chance yes as flow has an impact on these coral.
