The 120 I just finished setting up only has two holes in each of the overflows and I set both up as Herbie's (full suctions in each) and ran my return over the back of the tank ("street" elbow). With an Exotic Marine sump kit and a DC return pump, I'm extremely pleased with the result, as there is absolutely zero sound from water movement, at the DT or the sump, all I can hear is the gentle sounds of the fans in the light. After years of hearing a small waterfall in my prior 90 gal overflow, I didn't think it would be possible to have an aquarium this quiet.
can you post pictures please.

I am new to all the plumbing needs of a sump. I have no advice as my overflow gurgles here and there. Sound of trickling water is over powered by my sump pump, another overly noise making piece.

So, upgrade to a quiet pump, look into hard plumbing. I got things to do.
Best thing I ever did with my noisy pump that was 100% hard plumbed was to cut out a section and use flexi tube about 8 inch and it now is silent.

I fixed my noise by converting to Herbie since he have 3 holes in the overflow. All Left to do is get quite equipment.

Ecotech tech pumps is what I currently use and mine is very quiet . The only thing I hear on my tank is when a snail raps on the glass

I run Herbie on my fw tank it is super quiet and easy to use. I had a few problems while setting the display tank water level but fixed it when I moved and the tank was empty. I had to leave it like this because the tank was cycling and I didn’t really have the balls to cut away any more of the glass to try and lower the level in the display tank. A few pics of my diy bodge job.

When I moved I manned up and cut more away, still worry about putting the lights in water but the level is a lot lower.

I have used the Eshopps Eclipse Medium on my 75 Gallon Mbuna Tank and the water just falls down too far. The only remedy for that is lower flow and have less movement of the water surface. thats the flaw of the design of that overflow.

I recently built a 90 gallon reef tank with the Exotic Marine Overflow. So far its dead silent. The only thing I hear is the ripples on the water on the surface from my RFG return and powerhead. I am using Sicce ADV 7 return with 1" flex pvc and 90° sweeps. I am probably getting 1500 gph? And the overflow is dead silent.

Heres a recent video of my aquarium.

At 2 min mark i started talking about it.

I’m not sure what you mean by it falls down too far. Can you share a pic?
i think what is meant is that from the teeth of the weir the water drops into the box creating a waterfall noise because the water level inside of the inner box is low because of the water level in the outer box. btw i solved this for the Eshopp's overflow by inserting egg-crate in the inner box to break up the waterfall.

Ahh I thought he meant the outer box water level is really low, I have a valve on mine so it’s really easy to find the sweet spot. I also made a tiny slice right at the top of my emergency drain above the sweet spot and when I adjust it I let a tiny trickle go down there just to save making adjustments (my level tends to drop from time to time).
If he is talking about that the egg crate is a good idea, another solution is to file the back of the teeth so the water slopes down into the weir, this should stop the water trapping bubbles as it transitions from horizontal to vertical movement.
I have started growing plants in my outer box and found they grow really well with really fast roots perfect if you want to clone your favorite house plant.
If the water level is falling so much maybe the tank has been drilled too low. I’m not that clued up on this part but I know there should be 3 levels
1. Tank display.
2. Weir.
3. Drain box.
I’m not sure about the terminology used for these parts and feel I should (please correct me) my weir is super slim and the water hardly drops at all in this part. As it enters the drain box it drops about an inch but it is still silent.
Please share some pictures of your water flowing through the system and let’s see if we can solve it
