I just got this black cap jawfish yesterday and dropped him into my qt, where the melanurus wrasse was sleeping in the sand at the time. I woke up to them brutally battling it out on the sand bed with the adult melanurus wrasse savagely beating the crap out of it. Quickly transferred the jawfish to an acclimation box.

It now has a swollen right eye which I think resulted from the injury because it wasn’t there when I get it. Will this heal on its own?

The trouble with jawfish is that they are really stressed out without a burrow, and holding it in an acclimation box will do just that.

What about putting the wrasse in the box and letting the jawfish make a good burrow?

Erythromycin (Maracyn 1) often works well for simple eye infections.

Bad news, it is laying on its sides but is still responding. The acc box is too small for the wrasse and can hold sand

I don’t know if it will help at this point, but jawfish love to inhabit the clear plastic lids you can find from DQ or McD’s sundaes. You can even glue substrate on the outside to make it look like a natural den.

ha never heard of that. That’s cool. A good excuse to eat some ice cream too.

In a reef tank with sand you can just partially bury it to keep it in place - and even line the outside with some small rocks and rubble.
