I’ve been around for awhile, but never have I been a member. I thought it was time to keep some sort of log of my tank. Anyways I’ve been growing corals since I was 10 years old and now I currently run my own aquarium service company at 28. I’ve had large, medium, and nano tanks. Apparently I just can’t get enough lol. Moving on to the tank itself. I’ll list the specs below it’s been running for about 8-9 months now. It’s kalk driven although at this point I’m dosing daily. Flirting around with idea of a CARX or doser. (Yeah that never happened , still hand dosing 2x daily 40mls each dose mornings/evenings total of 80mls of both ALK and CAL equal parts every 24hrs, 5 mls mag all brs dry bulk)

Tank: 36”x18”x18”
-custom built planet aquariums tideline rimless w/ starefire and thicker glass.

Thanks bubba. My pictures look horrible once I upload them some reason. This is the best I have at the moment. It’s definitely a blue light coral as far as I’m concerned. It’s mostly pink with silvery polyps under daylight. I’ve struggled with it since day one lol.

Very nice! What are your gyre settings if you don’t mind sharing? I’ve blamed my struggles with acro growth on my gyres but clearly they can grow acros!

So it’s been a rough 6 month period in life, but other then a crash wiping out a lot of stuff, my Alk rising to 15 dkh, and black bugs coming back ferociously I still have some stuff. I had a bad car accident and some family issues coupled with a big business loses my head was elsewhere. The above pictures are are current after major implosion. I’m currently in phase 3 of 5 a complete very thorough overhaul which included treating the bugs, aiptasia removal (for good!!), fragging and thinning out corals I now longer want or that died, cleaning up overall, and a complete new ultra minimalistic aquascape. I will be putting the corals on racks here shortly while I treat my rocks isolated from the display. I’ve tried berghias and 25 peppermint shrimp my wolf pack of fish straight up hunts them down with minutes. It bizarre my wrasses don’t mind well unless you’re a berghia then it’s steak dinner, but the evil ringleader of the slaughter is my ******* child one eyed purple tang . Even if I add them at night when the lights are off, and that hints to why it’s so bad (aiptasia problem). I lost my beloved red dragon colony, one of my pink Cadillacs, all my nasuta’s, bc aquatic man, and snipers sps bubblegum mille. There’s more but as it sits right now after 2 6x recommended interceptor treatments (36 hours exposure before w/c and 48 hours before carbon) and 10 hours of clean up this is where I’m at . I now have a file fish that was my last attempt at eradicating the aiptasia. It has manage to eat most of my zoas . It literally was taking chunks out of my paly grandis like I front of my eyes. I remind myself why I never add them, but I managed to sell all of my Speckled Kraks before he could eat them lol.

Hey there Hemmdog how’s it going? I actually setup/service reef tanks for a living. I grow acro’s in all my clients tanks to keep me interested lol. I use jebao’s , gyres, and vortechs. All can grow sps just fine. For me have random flow really helps with overall success. The other major element is to keep your pump clean I’m always surprised how much of a difference in out there is before and after. The normality of a constant or straight flow while it will work. I feel when have different pump pushing water at different times it’s almost like waves crashing which is more natural and yeilded the best results. I don’t know the technical terms per maxspect lol, but when I had both gyres running they would alternate between left and right ramp from 0-100% 4-6 second at a time I believe. I honestly am fed up though since they had some manufacturing issues back 2018. My new one died with a year just recently now a jebao on full on wave mode replaced it getting awesome results now! For $200 it should last longer than that so $4o jebao works better for actual wave making, the gyres are great for evenly distribution/linear flow. When your colonies get big pointed flow is honestly my useful because not everyone likes to get blasted. Along with higher then recommended n03/Po4 I don’t chase numbesr on any of my personal/clients tanks(other then ALK/CAL/MAG). Last I checked 5 months ago no3 20-25ppm and p04 .19. I feed 2 cubes plus a chunk of LRS reef frenzy daily and alternate day on seaweed. My par is high like 450 in the upper part and 250 in the very corner results via apogee par meter. I use regular instant ocean no lie and a reef octopus skimmer that’s rated for 4-5x my net volume (60 gallons).

Nice thank you for that. I do need to clean mine more often than I currently do, it is amazing how much flow they put out when they are freshly cleaned. I will try your flow pattern out, I’m currently using short pulse 0.6 second ramp up to 70%, alternating sides. It’s turbulent and my lps grows like crazy, montis, birdsnest, but my acros don’t grow hardly at all. I have an mp10 on pulse 70% in there as well for extra randomness. I have 2 360x’s and a hybrid with 2blue+ & 2coral+ - par was around 300 mid tank, 215 sandbed. bubble mag skimmer (curve 7 elite) rated for a 200 I think, on my 90. I use tropic marin pro, parameters stable & on dosers at 8.5 420 1350, 5-10 NO3, .03-.05 PO4. 78 degrees solid on a ranco. This tank is a year old, Tonga branch cycled before hand. This tank is loaded with coraline now. Nopox 7ml’s daily. Red Sea traces dosed on calc consumption every other day. 0 tds water. Idk. Figured I’d lay it all out there if you see anything peculiar.

Good luck!
Some nice pics in your thread, congrats.
Thank you for the kind words. I’ll post some more pictures! I wish I had better content for y’all, but I’m grateful that I ended up with what was left of my collection after all the stuff that happened over this rough patch haha. I fed my fish like 1 time a week and topped it off only when it was running dry, no w/c’a for 4 months.and was just dumping a lot buffer in without measuring hints the 15 dkh Alk spike (I add 40mls x2 a day) I had to be adding 120 mls plus in one dosage haha total ignorance . After one of my friends was like dude wake up you know your tank needs you, I got my motivation back I’m really pumped about redoing it. I’ll take a ton of pictures!

Your water parameters are great! If you can get the gyres cleaned up, and then try and point them more so down towards your corals if they aren’t already. Since you have taller narrow tank (looks like rr aqueon/all glass/oceanic 90gallon) with a minimalistic aquascape you naturally will have a lot of what I call dead space or open water. Try keep your return nozzle on surface duty for shimmer/oxygenation. Use the gyres for coral contacting flow. Hope that helps! Here’s 200 gallon in wall peninsula I installed and have serviced for 2 years (the last year it’s really done well before that it had major problems algae, ich, new reef owners) with a decent amount for sps (including a red dragon!) and gyres! I run an aquaticlife hybrid with 3 hydra 26 hd’s and huge UV sterlizer bc it gets hit with a ton of natural sun light this is also hand dosed with plain instant ocean w/c’s about 10% twice a month. Triton test is shipped every 6 months. Don’t mind the sand though there’s 2 large Julia sand sifting gobies they’re messy turds :l.

Gorgeous! Thank you for taking the time to help out! Yep it’s an oceanic 90. The gyres are angled up kinda, for surface agitation, so I’ll clean and angle them down and bend the loc line returns to come out on the surface, change the program to longer pulses; Sounds like a plan! You concur that flow is my issue? I don’t know what else it could possibly be. I’ve also considered putting mp40’s under the gyres for tons of flow, but that’s quite an investment for 2. Gorgeous tanks once again and thank you for the tips!

Oh and what’s your hack to cleaning the gyres? I have trouble getting them clean. I’ve done the cages in vinegar & water. But the blades are super hard to clean. I was thinking maybe I’d try directly soaking the whole gyre in peroxide?

Walt Disney Colony (4” tall/ 3” across started 3/4” skinny stick). Side note this acro is bulletproof I swear during all the mayhem it never showed any signs of stress just happy as ever. Funny things is the heartbreaker, pc Superman, Tyree pinky the bear, Oregon tort (been with me for 5 years and is only grown 3” comical to say the least), bc backdraft the movie table also where completely happy with awesome color, pe, overall vitality and unaffected by black bugs never saw any on them lol. It’s really amazing how much each acro varies in terms of the black bugs some are completely untouched, some are tolerable with pe and growth, some don’t have pe and no growth but live some how, and some are sentenced to a quick demise aka The Pink Cadi.

Aussie blue/grey horrida this has also been with me as long a the tort it’s about 5” tall now started off around 2”. It’s had a rough time up until this tank was established. Very sensitive, but I’ve never had anything like in terms of coralite structure and pe I love it!

RR pink Cadillac (this is after bugs and treatments if you can believe it actually was worst the worst filaments I’ve ever seen 24/7 like it was in the brink of death. It was the most severely impacted by the bug infestation it went having good growth with pink hue coming in with prominent yellow contrasted by blue polyps to nearly completely dead in 2 weeks. I lost the mother colony quickly. This one has stopped throwing filaments and the tissue is healing it’s still looks haggard AF. I can’t wait to have it back I was super upset when I nearly lost it because it was given to me by a good friend! It had me thinking I had flatworms but I’ve truly tried to find eggs/the typical bite marks and never found any where. Now it’s improving my anxiety is down a country mile lol

Yeah just Acros mine where more dark grey and it doesn’t take a lot of them to upset most of them. Another well known member had them way way back he helped me significantly with the first treatment would’ve works but I went lite on the dosage. They’re super tough compared to red bugs like their almost a walk in the park to get rid off. I would acro eating flatworms aren’t equivocal. I’ve had them from the beginning the first treat was 3x time (recommended dosage) with 4 months they came back under totalitarian rule without a follow up treatment. Fast forward to present I felt the need to nuke the tank hard it was all or nothing I went with 7x concentration of interceptor 2 weeks apart at 24 hours exposure in tank (red bugs is 6-8 hours!). I even went further did the wc 20% at the 24 hour mark and carbon later at 48 hours. It’s really rough on the sps I mean everything expect a few the Walt Disney and my Oregon tort along with a couple of others that seem to enjoy it, the majority brown out throw filaments and lose pe for at least a week. It’s safe but there’s associates after repercussions I always wait to long to treat or under dose hopefully I’m past the bugs. I ordered a large qty 24 tablet for $75 beef flavor chews of interceptor on eBay back in 2018 on a string of luck I couldn’t source it to save my life because it’s become antiquated since most vets refuse to use it since it’s not a all in one k9 treatments like most of today’s products. My corals were dying and I blew up every forum and one guy said “chill dude check ebay”. Where ever you are you’re a awesome reefing friend! The vet just thinks you’re seeking narcotic’s/or smoking dope when you try to explain why you need it haha (perscription only even online). My sticks have parasites please help they and they go “oh no you have serious problems” lol.

H2o2 is great! I just take the gyres apart and soak all the individual parts overnight in 2:1 water to vinegar mix sometime stronger. That usually loosens most of the build up then I have a atoothbrush, narrow dish brush, and coarse brush I just get to with elbow grease it’s a Pain lol.
