Man I was freaking out about an hour ago. I cleaned my sump yesterday, and did a water change on the tank today with sand cleaning. I am in the middle of the uglies from what I can tell. But , my water mix was at 35 ppt, my tank tested at 35 ppt last week. But 1 hour after the tank clean today I am at 33 ppt. i am OCD about a few things and this is one of them. I freaked, tested the left over tank mix, tested the tank again. Brought out my older refractometer. Tested the same. So my knee jerk was to instantly correct the salinity, but after a few deep breaths, I decided to manually top off with salt water until testing shows correct, I only have fish and 1 frag, which i have to say everybody looks happy.

For the uninformed, what specifically do you need to be ready for with plates?
They typically do better once you've got your tank well-stabilized, not lots of GHA all about (GHA can attach to their exposed skeleton when they aren't happy), and certainly no dinos/cyano on the sand bed. Bubble algae is also problematic, but that's easier to remedy--just pop the bubbles off their skeleton. Ideally you want them nice and puffy with no skeleton showing.

Good news, bad news.

Good: I did something. Tested Alk/NO3/PO4

Bad: Alk 7.3 (OK), NO3 >100ppm (WhAT!?), PO4 ~1.0ppm (WHAT!?)

Recall, I've been having to dump more and more food to keep NO3 > 0ppm and PO4 in a decent range. I know my DI resin's burnt up, but MAN, this is crazy!

Time to order new resin...

Well, this explains a few things going sideways in the tank. Surprisingly SPS is holding on. Just ordered some replacement filters. Arriving tomorrow. Now gonna go test the saltwater I made...

My tank was still newish and I didn’t want to risk it

Just checked Nitrates in recently made saltwater. It's showing up around 1ppm, but a very expired kit. I'm going to have to assume that the high NO3 and PO4 are coming from somewhere else in the tank. Perhaps the dead firefish and tailspot blenny? I have a hard time imagining that--my CUC should be handling bodies very quickly with no leftovers... Perhaps I'll have to change my feeding regimen.
