so, this piece of acropora (not named at LFS) just one from the $19.99 sps frag tank.
i've picked up a frag of this particular one two times before. and they all RTN'ed on me.
but i'm not giving up.

so far so good... one week, and still alive!

anyone care to name / identify this coral? either by species or "popular reef retailer name"? :D

put in a filter sock this morning, and turkey basted the rocks.

this guy seemed to really enjoy it :)
at least i hope thats a good sign...

lights were still ramping up, so the picture is not very good. cloudy tank, low light.

finally glued all my zoa frags to zoa rock!

the rastas and fire&ice were on there for quite some time already. they have already established a little mini colony already.

theres a small patch of eagle eyes or watermelons (not sure) behind the little red ones on the other side.

and a little pipe organ frag. it looked soo cool.
not sure if it likes its current spot, i think it's getting too much flow.
anyone got experience with these?

looks like it's starting to get used to its new home. looking much better now.

Went to petco yesterday, challenged my son to a 1 gallon freshwater build off :)
he picked up two guppies.

and i picked up another little Trimma goby for the reeftank.

turn out petco keeps their salt water tanks at 25 ppt! (yes, ppt, not SG!) that 1.018 SG.

picked up two new pieces of SPS frag yesterday.
not sure what they are, hope they color up nicely :D

i had to cut and glue them to new frag disks, because the store frags were infested with algae, hydroids and vermetids...

so, it's been about a year or so since i've updated this.
2020 was a rough year, and even though i spent most of it locked up at home, i neglected my tank. various reasons and excuses for this... but not going to bore you with that.

long story short... right now i have three fish alive, most zoas are still alive, but not doing well. some of then open up about 50% others stay closed, and have reduced in size.
GSP frag has grown slowly over time, but never really looked great. it still has little polyp extension.
pipe organ frag still has a few polyps alive, and holding on.
all other corals are dead.

all snails died.
all hermits died
neon gobie and firefish died. they were doing good, not sure if it was natural causes, oldage... never really saw them suffer.

over the course of a year, i had outbreaks of dinos and cyano.

i treated with dino-x, vibrant, and chemi clean. no, not all at once, but over a few months.

the tank looked REALLY ugly for a long time, but it's finally bouncing back, the water looks clear, not too much unwanted growth anymore, but not yet perfect.

sent in a triton test last week, and results came back with most things in the normal ranges.
the only things that stood out were: tin, zinc, cobalt and iron.

even though these levels still seem on the lower end, i'm not sure these are cause for "immeditate" action.

the only things that i have dosed into the tank were: TM all for reef, and brightwell amino acids every once in a while.

feed the fish small amounts of new life spectrum optimum flakes.

so what's the plan?

blow off the rocks more often, and let the filter socks clean up the water.
run some polyfilter to polish the water regularly.

i may run something like cuprisorb or metasorb to see if it removes some unwanted metals.

keep an eye on the corals, while trying to not overreact, and try to fix everything at once.

the tank this morning, the lights just started to ramp up, it's still pretty dim.

so, i assumed i was trying to get rid of some diatoms, partly because my triton test read slightly elevated Si

until i decided to check with a microscope...

amphidinium dinoflagellates :(

these things just look like diatoms in the tank. just brown dust.

so, i started dosing dino X a few days ago. fingers crossed.

also picked up some pods becaue i haven't seen any in my tank for a long time.

visited LFS and picked up their last two trocus snails. they are going to town on the rocks.
i hope they don't die from dino poisoning.
