My stirrer still has about 1 1/2 - 2" of kalk in the bottom, but I noticed my alk is dropping as well as pH and calc. Is it possible that the remaining kalk in the stirrer is "dead" and just hasn't dissolved? Does kalk lose its properties sitting in a supersaturated solution like that over time and needs to be dumped and replaced?

The best way to gauge potency is by conductivity. It’s more accurate than pH, where a drop of 0.3 pH units is a 50% drop in potency.

Does it matter to you whether your fish are captive-bred or wild caught?
