I want to build a 40 breeder decorative macro algae tank that will attach (upstream) to my 75 gal main tank. The goal is to have a bad axs macro algae display and pod production factory as well as use it as my main form of filtration. I want no skimmer on my tank. The main tank will be stuffed full of fish and have an emphasis on gorgonias and most likely LPS.

With that said, I bought a Neptune GRO light over the black Friday weekend and I am yet to open it. At the time, I just wanted a generic refugium in my sump that would be 12in x 18in area. It seemed sufficient at the time, but with my new vision, I'm wondering if I should sell the GRO light unopened and buy a Kessil A360X to accommodate my new goal. The answer seems clear, 20W vs 90W but I'd like some opinions.

It's funny. As I write this I feel like I'm convincing myself.

I've been in this hobby for 30+ years. I find that buying the right equipment upfront is just about as challenging as keeping the fish. Since I'm in an area where there are few like me and there are no real LFS, I have no way of observing or discussing these subjects face to face. I'd appreciate feedback from those that have one of these lights.

I have a GRO light pushing my normal small area refugium but I have to say if I was going to do the build that you are looking at I would for sure 100% go with the A360X. The GRO is amazing for what it is designed for but to cover that area and supply the needed light coverage for that tank I would say the Kessil would be the better choice IMHO.

Why not do both? Chaeto in sump, and a nice display fuge. The Chaeto can act as a filter straight from the tank. The display fuge may not remove as much waste as you'd like. My mangrove looks great, but doesn't do anything other than make me happy. I think I'm going to add some clams this summer to it.

I’d even consider a kessil FW planted light. I personally hated the heavy pink light, made my house look like a strip club at night. Lol

I went with the 180 because I’m more of a standard sized fuge area. Growth has been great, I did add a tunze submersible “pink” to supplement from the bottom, but I really wanted to show off my diversity of macros!

Just a thought!
